CIF Round 2

Boys Soccer

Game #24 CIF #2 2/15/23 VS J Serra LOST 4 - 2

In the second round or the quarter-finals of division 1 “Sweet 16” CIF finals number 8 Fullerton hosts the number 1 seed, J. Serra. The team spent time watching J Serra game films, so we knew we had to be sharp and execute because they were big and fast. The game started as expected fast and physical.

The game is 8:00 minutes in when Fullerton surprises everyone with the game's first score. Aiden Bengard makes a great pass to Kenneth Flores who drives the ball to the back of the net.  5:00 minutes later J Serra on a Corner Kick scores to tie the game at 1-1. It takes J Serra only 15:00 minutes more to get their second Corner Kick and score another header off their teams' tall players. FUHS fights back and Aiden Bengard gets taken down in the box for a Penalty Kick. The ball is shot right at the keeper for a save and missed goal. In the 35:00 minute, J Serra scores their third goal on a long shot from 25 yards out. Half-time J Serra is up 3-1. Fullerton has a number of missed opportunities, shots wide, shots off the post, and saves by the keeper, but they keep battling. Not until the 76:00 minute on a FUHS Corner Kick by Kenneth Flores does Talon Oakert score and give Fullerton hope. However, 2:00 minutes later on a tough call, J Serra is awarded a Penalty Kick on a player dropped in the box. Number 91 takes the shot and drives it home for his 3rd goal and the 4th goal of the game. Fullerton loses 4-2 and is eliminated from the playoffs. This is the third year in a row Fullerton made it to the Division 1 Quarter Finals. The Coaching staff is PROUD of the teams' playoff efforts and GREAT season finishing with 18 wins, 4 losses, and 2 ties, scoring 69 goals for and only 18 against.

Kenneth Flores scored 24 Goals and 17 Assists for this season = 2nd most goals in a season & 2nd most career goals (School Record)

Aiden Bengard scored 12 Goals and 9 Assists this season

A SEASON TO BE PROUD OF for our Div. 1 Team!

Wrestling

FUHS Girls Wrestling are still in the game! They are off to CIF Masters this weekend in Palm Springs. Matches are taking place at Palm Springs H.S. with weigh-ins at 8am. Join the TRIBE in cheering on Amanda Toledo at 150 lbs class (left) and Julia Bustamante at 160 lbs class (right). These two seniors have done a great job representing Fullerton. Good Luck to Coach Fregoso, Amanda and Julia this weekend.

Spring Sports

Spring Sports are here!!

Softball

Our season so far has been very successful in all aspects of this program. We have accumulated a total of 37 runs in the past 4 games. Hard work, effort, and respect are what allow our team to mesh as well as it has. Our upcoming games this Saturday are going to be competitive and challenging, but our program is short of nothing. We have an incredible depth chart, and each and every one of our players has been an attribute to our recent success.

Baseball

Our returning Freeway League Champs started out the regular season on a great opening day win over Corona del Mar with a 9-0 victory. Today, our team travels to take on San Clemente in the Loara Tournament. After last year’s great run to a CIF-SS Finalist and a CIF State Regional Finalist, the TRIBE has moved up to CIF-SS Div. 2. This will be an exciting year. Come join the fun and cheer on the team!

Boys Volleyball

The boys are gearing up for an exciting season. They participated in the Garden Grove end of the off-season Spike-Off tournament this past weekend. The boys went undefeated, 3-0 in pool play, defeating Montebello 2-0, Castaic 2-1, and California 2-0, to advance to the playoffs, where they eventually lost to Lancaster in the championship match in a nailbiter, 25-23. Our season opens up on the road on Tuesday at Magnolia. First home opener will be Wednesday, 22 Feb, against Saddleback, who was a CIF finalist last year. Come out and support the boys.

Track and Field

The boys and girls track & field teams competed in a scrimmage meet against La Serna and John Glenn High School. Team scores were not kept for the meet but many athletes recorded personal bests to kick off the season. On the girls side, freshman Melina Sibal ran 13.46 in the 100m and 27.68 in the 200m which was good for 1st and 2nd, junior Morgan McAndrew placed 1st in the 1600m (5:33.60) and 2nd in the 800m (2:28.58), senior Haley Won won the 100m hurdles (19.92) and triple jump (31-01), and senior Layla Thornton was a doubler winner in the shot put (32-07) and discus (91-05). The girls team welcomed many newcomers and are in position to compete with the best teams in the Freeway League this year!

On the boys side, senior Dorian Yepez was a double winner in the 110 high hurdles (16.76) and 300m hurdles (45.01), sophomore Elijah Jordan performed well in the 100m (12.10), sophomore Jack Golla competed in well in the 800m (2:11.29), junior Alejandro Hernandez ran a life time best in the 1600m (4:46.51), junior DJ Cobbs rose to 05-04 in the high jump, Henry Pillon recorded 18-10.00 in the long jump while Nicholas Kimoto jumped 18-02.00, Jaden Pulsifer led the throwing crew with a mark of 34-09 in the shot put, and Chris Rasmussen threw 94-10 in the discus. The boys also welcomed many newcomers and worked to improve on their 4th-place league finish from 2022 while the frosh-soph boys are the two-time defending league champions!

Swim & Dive

Swim is off and sprinting hard this week. The athletes are putting in the most yards they can out of any other practice to prepare their minds and bodies for the rigors to come this season. Fullerton has its first swim meet in three weeks against Oxford Academy on March 7.

Dive practice starts next week Monday through Friday at Fullerton Junior College.

Boys Golf

Varsity is getting ready to play their first golf tournament at Los Serranos on Feb 27th. They have been working hard every day on putting and ball striking.

JV is not far behind, working on tempo and form this week.

Boys Tennis

The tennis team faced a tough challenge against Servite this past week which allowed for the boys to find their stroke for the upcoming season. Many of the doubles teams were able to put their teamwork into action through match play, with some notable wins between them. The boys will be back on the courts next week as they face El Dorado for a preseason game.
