Celebrating English Learners and Bilingualism

Learning a new language is extremely difficult and having to learn it while also learning other subjects is even more difficult. We celebrated the great accomplishments of these very students! The students pictured should be commended for maintaining a 3.0 - 4.0 GPA! It was great to see some of them also get reclassified as Fluent English learners! Thank you to all of our teachers for supporting our students and to Ms. Cortes for organizing the events.

AP Environmental Science Field Trip

Mrs. Perez's AP Environmental Science class had the unique opportunity to visit Dr. Kirby's Geology lab at Cal State Fullerton. Dr. Kirby led students through a hands-on experiment examining the relationship between the cost of various baby powders and grain size, demonstrating how state of the art technology is used in scientific labs for quality control. Dr. Kirby was assisted by FUHS alumni, Katya Beener, who works as a research assistant in his lab, pursuing her master's degree in Geology at Cal State Fullerton. Students were also given the rare treat to view Dr. Kirby's & Katya Beener's Paleoclimatology research up-close when he opened a 1,000 year old soil core for them. Students used the prior knowledge gained from their AP Environmental Science class to make observations about the core, while Dr. Kirby discussed what types of climate events could be determined based on the layers. This was a special opportunity because Dr. Kirby is an FUHS parent and Katya Beener is also Mrs. Perez's sister, demonstrating the strong partnerships and community involvement FUHS strives to develop. Thank you to Dr. Kirby and Katya Beener for being valued members of our FUHS family. 

People seeking mental health support or those willing to take care of themselves need to be reminded of how brave and strong they are. This week’s Mental Health Awareness Month flyer acknowledges and empowers those of us who are willing to prioritize our wellness, recognizing that it is not easy to do so. We offer 3 exercises that can help build confidence, increase motivation, or support someone in their journey to wellness. In addition, we provide resources that may be important to consider - because we are not meant to try to figure it all out on our own. We hope these exercises are things you can consider doing for yourself, in your class, or something to share with others.
