Peninsula Sports Update
With all seasons of sports now complete, here are some highlights of the Spring season.
Boys Volleyball
A third place finish in the competitive Bay league capped by two big wins against Palos Verdes meant a first round playoff game versus Valencia.
Boys and Girls Lacrosse
For the first time in school history both teams made the playoffs and won wildcard games at home, earning them a spot in the first round of CIF.
Swimming
At Bay league finals, the boys(Yoon, Yousefi, Sato, Lakis) broke a school and league record in the 200 Freestyle Relay with a time of 126.95. And freshman Elsie delaCruz broke a school and league record for the 100 breaststroke with a time of 105.16. Congratulations to the Varsity swimmers who competed in CIF: Brandon Yoon(school record in the 100 and 200 Freestyle), Alex Yousefi, Hiro Sato, Logan Lakis, Rayen Lin, Elsie delaCruz, and Mekalea Kaji.
Boys and Girls Tennis
The Boys won the Bay league outright and qualified for the Open division where they lost in a nail-biter (9-9, 81-80 in games).
The girls won Bay league and a second consecutive Open division title and were Southern Regional Finalists.
Both teams have individuals still competing.
Track and Field
John Wooden once said, “if you fail to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” The track and field team PREPARED! In fact, they prepared so well they won a Bay League Championship and had 22 athletes qualify for CIF postseason.
With only 108 athletes, a relatively small team since they usually have about 200, the T&F team won every dual meet at all levels this season. On May 28th, the Bay League Championship meet was held at Redondo Union High School, where the varsity girls and frosh soph girls won their perspective team titles outright. The boys were close behind, but the girls had enough points to ensure the whole program a combined team championship. This combined championship hasn’t occurred since the 1990’s.
Elite Scorer Award winner Alyssa Matsuzaki (12th) won every hurdle event (100 and 300 hurdles), and triple jump event she competed in this season. In fact, she won the prestigious Arcadia Invitational 300m hurdles event, where they typically have the fastest high school athletes in the country. Alyssa qualified in four events in CIF, which is very rare. She will be attending UCLA where she will continue pursuing her athletic goals.
Ewan Macfarlane (12th) and Aishling Callanan (10th) earned the Varsity most valuable athletes award because of extremely intense competitive moments in distance races. Specifically, in the 800m, 1600m, and 3200m races. Aishling has a few more years of high school success, where Ewan will move on and compete for UCLA.
Francesca Villain (10th) and Tony Valencia (10th) earned the frosh/Soph most valuable athlete awards. She successfully competed in the pole vault, 300m hurdles, 4x100, and high jump. Tony was dedicated beyond belief and competed in the 400m, 800m, and 4x400m relay.
Gabrielle Pack (12th) earned the “Grit” Award because of the four intense years at pursuing perfection in the pole vault. She is getting closer and closer. She broke the school record three times. She qualified for CIF in pole vault, as well as on the 4x100 relay team. She will be competing for Cornell in the Fall.
Erin Nimick (12th) earned the Leadership Award. With a team of leaders, she managed to basically coach the sprinters. She is wise beyond her years. In addition to her leadership skills, she qualified for CIF in the 4x100m relay. She will continue her education and athletic goals at Purdue University in the Fall.
Since our season began a month after its normal start date, we must compete after school ends in CIF Finals taking place on June 12th. Several athletes will be competing for medals. The varsity girls will be competing for a CIF Championship.
Girls Basketball
The Lady Panthers secured a second straight Bay league title by beating Palos Verdes in the last game of the season and earned a first round home game where they beat Brentwood 71 – 54. The girls ended their season with a loss to eventual champion Long Beach Poly.
Boys Golf
The boys golf team won a league title for the fifth consecutive year, had two individuals qualify for CIF and competed in the Division 1 Team Championship where they made the cut to play in the CIF Team Finals. Senior Greyson Leach was named player of the year and also qualified to play in the Southern State Regional.
Cheer and Song
After practicing all year long, Cheer and Song finally got a chance to perform at Football and Basketball, and even made an appearance at Lacrosse. Their high-flying routines brought some normalcy back to our home games and smiles to people’s faces. The excitement these teams add to high school sports is undeniable.

At the June 8th banquet, winners of Captains of the Year, Most Inspirational and Athlete of the Year were announced. And the winners are…
