A Focus on Safety and Social-Emotional Wellbeing for Students and Staff

Dear Minuteman Students, Parents/Guardians, and Staff:

For my update this week, I’d like to take a moment to recognize Assistant Principal Brian Tildsley (pictured right) for his ongoing commitment and passion for keeping all of us safe at Minuteman. Mr. Tildsley maintains strong ties with safety officials, studies school safety, and helped design some of the building’s safety features.

On Wednesday, October 26, Mr. Tildsley worked with Massachusetts Partnerships for Youth (MPY) Director Margie Daniels to host the MPY Statewide Safety Summit here at Minuteman. Superintendents and administrators from several school districts, along with 83 law enforcement officers, and several other people who support student social-emotional learning and wellness, came together at Minuteman to share information on how to keep students safe and prevent incidents before they occur.

The headline speaker was Ms. Michelle Gay, who tragically lost her daughter in the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting in 2012. It was an honor for Ms. Gay, the co-founder of Safe and Sound Schools, to endorse Minuteman’s building safety features, such as our security guards, swipe-card door systems, and numerous security cameras. Her speech about her unfathomable experience was powerful, and her inner strength is beyond amazing. (Pictured above are Margie Daniels, executive director of Mass. Partnerships for Youth; Sudbury Police Chief Scott Nix; and Michelle Gay, co-founder of Safe and Sound Schools.)

It is also because of Mr. Tildsley’s efforts that Minuteman has a positive relationship with local law enforcement, particularly the Lincoln Police Department. (The school building is on the Lincoln end of our campus, which is in both Lincoln and Lexington.) On Monday, October 24, all the officers from the Lincoln Police visited Minuteman throughout the day to attend professional training sessions and review safety practices. Because we have open lines of communication, the Lincoln Police have been quick and attentive to any routine issues that have arisen and have always been helpful. We welcome the local police to visit Minuteman at any time because we want our students to recognize the officers as adults who are dedicated to helping them.

One thought that resonated with me following these training sessions is the saying we encourage all community members to recall, “If you see something, say something.” The simple strategy of recognizing potential acts of harm and reporting it to school officials or police beforehand has been proven to prevent strategies and give students the help they need.

On behalf of Minuteman, I would like to thank all our law enforcement and social-emotional learning and wellness partners who work closely with us to ensure the safety and well-being of all students and staff.

Sincerely,

Mr. Clement
