Post-Graduation Planning with Grade 11 Students

Message Authored by

Principal George Clement:

When applying to college, what is the difference between “early-decision” and “early-action?” Where can one find a good source for available jobs in a sustainable, high-demand trade? What is the benefit of taking the armed forces ASVAB test?

Here at Minuteman, it’s important that we share with our students all available after-graduation options so that they make the choices that are right for them. With that in mind, this week our guidance counselors talked about post-graduation planning with the junior class.

Students learned how to apply to college, search for employment, and initiate a career in the armed services if they choose to do so. We want to challenge and help students to prepare now for their graduation and transition into the next phase of life. We also want them to connect their skills and aptitude with concrete plans that will lead them to success and happiness.

There are many roads leading to the mountaintop, and the presentation by our guidance counselors covered a wide range of topics. Students enroll in Minuteman to take advantage of our long list of educational opportunities, and we want to ensure we lead all of them on a path toward rewarding journeys after high school.

Parents and Guardians of Eleventh Graders: Please note that the Guidance Team is preparing a virtual presentation for you as well. Within the next couple of weeks, you will be notified about that in an email. We look forward to partnering with you in this process!

Holocaust Survivor, Minuteman Grandfather To Speak with Juniors

On Tuesday, January 24, Holocaust survivor Theofanis Ofranos, the grandfather of a current Minuteman student, will visit Minuteman for a screening of a documentary film made about his experience titled, Laugh Now: A Perspective on Life, Liberty & Holocaust, which chronicles Mr. Ofranos' escape from and resistance of Nazi persecution during World War II.

Mr. Ofranos will hold a discussion with students following the screening in the theater. He has previously spoken about his experience with students and the public at Arlington Catholic High School, Northeastern University, and the Regent Theater.

We are very grateful that Mr. Ofranos will share his deeply important story so that no one ever forgets the horror of the Holocaust, and that atrocities of the past are not repeated.

Please note: counseling staff will be ready to assist any students who may experience distress from the film. If parents/guardians have questions, please email Principal George Clement.

Happy Lunar New Year!

This weekend marks the Lunar New Year, which is celebrated in Asian cultures and begins with the first new moon on the lunar calendar.

As part of a learning integration project, on Friday, Superintendent Dr. Kathleen A. Dawson read a children’s book and demonstrated how to make traditional dumplings for preschool students at Minuteman’s Colonial Children’s Academy

The children also took part in an indoor parade from the library to the restaurant with a paper dragon, a traditional parade symbol.

The dragon is believed to bring good luck. The students got to make the dumplings with help from the Culinary students and teachers!

The project involved Minuteman students from the Early Education and Culinary Arts career majors.

Lunar New Year is a celebration of the arrival of spring and the beginning of a new year on the lunisolar calendar. It is the most important holiday in China and widely celebrated in South Korea, Vietnam, and countries with large Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese populations. Learn more.
