December 16, 2023

Hello Kelly,

As I reflect on this past year, I am so proud of everything our board has accomplished as we remained steadfast and mission-focused. Last January we established five board priorities: academics, climate and culture, fiscal responsibility, human resources, and student conduct, and we have been committed to these priorities when faced with major decisions.

At the organizational meeting in November, my colleagues voted for me to serve as the board chair for the second year in a row. Thank you for entrusting me with this responsibility and honor.

Last Tuesday the board met and voted on an invocation, which did not pass, and I was on the dissenting side. While I originally did support an invocation, it became clear to me that after much discussion, this did not fit in with our board priorities. Based on feedback I received since the vote, it seems for many that this was nothing more than virtue signaling and another opportunity to say, "I'm more Christian than you". It's no surprise that the comments made about my decision are far from the "Christian" values they hold so dear.

I will continue focusing on what is best for students and remain mission-focused. Here is the mission statement:

CCPS will develop students’ intellectual capacity and confidence in order to be successful lifelong learners with strong moral character who strive to reach their potential as productive members of American culture.

I would like to wish my colleagues, Dr. Ricciardelli and her staff as well as our students and families a joyous holiday season and a Happy New Year! I look forward to serving another year and hope for a happy and successful 2024!

With gratitude,

"Celebrate endings – for they precede new beginnings.”
