Country Store Goes Modern
(August 7, 1942 newspaper article under Halifax news.)
In many sections of New England, the old country store is fast becoming only a memory. On Friday of this week, Halifax, the geographical centre of Plymouth County, will note the change from the old country store and post-office to a self-service store.
The present store was built by the late George A. Estes during the summer of 1908, and opened to the public with organ music and refreshments for all in January, 1909. Mr. Estes not only sold groceries, including flour, sugar and molasses in barrels in those days, but also calico, gingham, grain, seed, hayforks, rakes, scythes, dishes and tin ware. His daughter, Mrs. Myrtie Armstrong of Plymouth Street, says her father once even accepted a commission to buy a hat for a customer.
Before building the store in its present location, Mr. Estes operated a country store at the top of the hill by the driveway at the present Brown Poultry Farm. What happened to the old store? It was moved, and now serves as a cow barn on the Brown farm.
The store which Mr. Estes built, with the help of Augustus Howland of Bryantville and the late George A. Armstrong of Plymouth Street, later was sold to his son, Albion. After a few years, he in turn sold to A. A. Anderson, who sold to George A. Armstrong in 1918. Mr. Armstrong was storekeeper for nine years, selling out in 1927 to Harry D. Minor, Sr.
In the fall of that year the post-office was transferred from the library building to the store, with Mr. Minor as postmaster. Mr. Minor was storekeeper and postmaster for 14 years, selling out to Rufus O. Case. On August 6, 1941, he took over the job of waiting on customers and tending mail at the same time.
Now Mr. Case has decided to "go modern" and let the customers wait on themselves.
[This store, now an apartment building, is located next to the museum. The one mentioned "at the top of the hill by the driveway" was once known as Packard's Store and would have been in the middle of the driveway between the Water Department and Pope's Tavern. The Brown's lived in what we know as "Pope's Tavern" and ran a poultry farm. Mrs. Brown sold the property to the town of Halifax. ]
Respectfully Submitted, Sue Basile

Avocado Tree Growing Indoors in Massachusetts
By Gregory Venezia
|
|
Something you might not know... You can grow avocado trees indoors here in Massachusetts. You start them in water until they sprout roots. Then pot them in dirt.
I put the pit in a plastic container filled with water and push toothpicks in the pit to suspend it over the water. I've heard that some people have simply put them in a plastic bag with water, and that worked for then. Then I put them in a pot of dirt. I used dirt from my garden.
I put the pits in water some time before September. They take a while to start growing roots, so it could have been a month or two.
|
|
In September 2018 it began to grow roots.
|
In December 2018 it began to sprout leaves.
|
In January the leaves got pretty big.
|
|
The picture to the left is the most recent photo I have of a few of the plants I'm growing. From left to right the plants are passion fruit vine, jack fruit, avocado tree, passion fruit vine. All the fruit to grow these plants can be purchased from the grocery store.
The avocado plant is starting to wilt, but I think that is from over watering, so with less frequent watering I hope to see it perk back up. The sunny weather should help too.
I like gardening because if something doesn't work you still learn something, and you can do better next time.

Socializing with Science
"Social Distancing" is a tool being put into place for large, close gatherings (sporting events, concerts) to slow the spread of this respiratory virus, a needed precaution. Due to this and the barrage of media attention, we at the
BuzzAround
advocate for our basic human need of interaction.
Here is some science on the spread of Covid-19: It is water droplets from a sick person getting into your body that will spread it. If it’s safe for you, all other life activities should continue. We need interaction with others, it's how we humans experience love.
Here are some suggestions for those that are able: 1) Take a walk or ride a bike around your neighborhood. Last night I was walking my dog and a neighborhood kid stopped and talked to me. We had a fun conversation. I am never disappointed checking out my neighborhood.
2) Shop at a locally owned store: Infamous for never being too busy, local shops are fun nooks of helpfulness and original items. If you don't see what you want, ask the owner or clerk to find something for you. They will go out of their way to help you. Talk about feeling loved!
3) Keep yourself healthy. Stay hydrated, get enough sleep and eat plenty of vegetables & fruit. If you don't recognize a word on a food's ingredient list, don't eat it!
4) Stay active in your local community & keep in touch with folks around you, if not in person, then by phone & messages.
5) If you have a fever or cough, please keep out of social interactions. And even if you don't present with symptoms, know that you can slow the spread of respiratory illness with frequent hand washing and being mindful of a 3 to 6-foot boundary around your mouth, nose & eyes.
And here is some social science: We are all in this together. Know your stuff and take care of yourself, but don't create an unhealthy lifestyle by isolating yourself.
Whatever challenges you face today, don't face them alone. ~ Jacquie

Badminton
by Deena Anzum, BuzzAround Intern
In the summertime when my cousins come over, we like to play badminton together. On the weekends when the weather is nice, we usually have barbecue parties. While the food is cooking, all the cousins get together and play. We usually like to form teams of two. Badminton is very enjoyable. It gets everyone energized and feels great when we get a continuous run. Sometimes the birdie will hit one of our faces and everyone laughs. Some of us even fall trying to catch the birdie.
My uncle was a badminton player back in the day so sometimes he would join. However, since he is a professional, he plays hard and even the good players cannot keep up! As a kid, my mother also played with her friends. So, she would join as well. It is even more fun when everyone joins in! One summer, all the parents came together and joined the kids so we had two big groups. We do not follow any of the usual rules for badminton. We just play for fun. We take turns serving and usually whichever side the birdie lands is the team that would serve. For example, if it lands on my team's side, then my team would serve.
With all this free time... outdoor activity is perfect!
