Long Term Care Awareness: Is For All Ages
|
November was Long Term Care (LTC) Awareness Month, but it is always important to help people understand the significance of planning for their future long-term care needs. This can be challenging, especially for those who find it hard to see themselves needing help with the most basic daily activities, like bathing or dressing. Yet taking accountability for their future care and planning for that day is something everyone should do.
Long-term care
is a range of services and supports you may need to meet your
personal care
needs. Most
long-term care
is not medical care, but rather assistance with the basic personal tasks of everyday life. How do you plan for your future care needs? Remember these items.
The need for LTC may not be tied to a person's age or health - you are never too young to plan for long term care! The younger you are and the healthier you are, the less your premiums for long term care insurance cost. The National Clearinghouse for Long-Term Care Information website provides objective information on understanding, planning and paying for long-term care. Given that one of the biggest barriers to planning is misinformation about long-term care, the Clearinghouse website is designed to provide people with the trusted information and resources they need to take an active role in planning for potential future needs.
At Pro Action's Yates NY Connects/Office for the Aging, there are two programs that assist individuals with long term care options. HIICAP (Health Insurance Information, Counseling and Assistance Program) provides assistance to individuals to understand various types of insurance for older persons, which include Long Term Care Insurance. The NY Connects Program assists all ages with needs for long term services or supports. Yates Office for the Aging also assists with linking people to aide services to help fulfill their ADL (Activities of Daily Living) and IADL (Instrumental Activities of Daily Living) needs to maintain residing in the community.

Pro Action of Steuben & Yates, Inc. is one of 1,000 Community Action Agency (CAA)'s in the United States. CAA's are intended to promote self-sufficiency, and depend heavily on volunteer work. The broad definition of volunteering is the act of offering to do work for no compensation. People tend to do work for organizations that have some personal meaning to them which also gives them fulfillment. But the importance of volunteerism is not just for that reason. Many organizations, including Pro Action, depend on volunteers.
With busy lives it can be hard to find time to volunteer, but volunteering doesn't have to involve a long-term commitment or take a lot of time out of your busy day. However, the benefits of volunteering are enormous to you, your family, and your community. Children watch everything you do, and by giving back to the community, you show them firsthand how volunteering makes a difference and how good it feels to help others. Volunteering offers vital help to people in need, worthwhile causes, and the community.
Pro Action's Yates Office for the Aging encourages you to get involved! Strengthen yourself by strengthening your community. When it comes to volunteering, passion and a positive attitude are the only requirements. The most valuable skills you can bring to any volunteer effort are compassion - and an open mind, a willingness to do whatever is needed, and a positive attitude. There are numerous volunteer opportunities available, and the key is to find a volunteer position that you would enjoy and that matches your skills and abilities. The right match can reduce stress, combat depression, keep you mentally stimulated, provide a sense of purpose, learn new skills, and even advance your career. Giving to others can also help protect your mental and physical health.
At Yates OFA, volunteers are utilized on a daily basis with crucial tasks such as helping to deliver meals to older adults' homes, contacting people by telephone to check on how they are doing, accompanying people to medical appointments, assisting with wellness classes, and assisting with office tasks.
