Happy November! It was wonderful to see so many of you at our virtual trainings last month, facilitated by some of my amazing colleagues. This month, we are excited to host a two-part Asylum 101 training led by PAIR's Executive Director, Anita Sharma, and our new Asylum Program Manager, Ilana Greenstein!


We highly recommend this training for active pro bono attorneys who are currently representing asylum-seeking clients, as well as attorneys who are considering taking on a full representation asylum case. PAIR's Anita P. Sharma and Ilana Greenstein will conduct a two-part pro bono training on asylum law, policy, and practice. The sessions will cover an overview of asylum law, how to work with asylum-seeking clients, interviewing survivors of violence, asylum case preparation and packaging, and the basics of presenting a case before the Asylum Office and Immigration Court.

Important Immigration Updates



Extension and Re-designation of Afghanistan and Venezuela for Temporary Protected Status (TPS)


Last week, the extension and re-designation of Afghanistan and Venezuela for TPS were announced.


The extension and re-designation of Afghanistan for TPS is for 18 months, from November 21, 2023 to May 20, 2025.


The extension and re-designation of Venezuela for TPS is also for 18 months, for Venezuelans who have arrived in the United States before July 31, 2023.



Affirmative Asylum Applicants Must Bring Own Interpreter to

Asylum Interview


USCIS now requires affirmative asylum applicants to bring their own interpreter to the asylum interview if they are not fluent in English or wish to proceed with their interview in a language other than English.


The interpreter must be fluent in English and a language the applicant speaks fluently, and must be at least 18 years old.


The interpreter must not be:


  • The applicant's attorney or accredited representative;
  • A witness testifying on the applicant's behalf;
  • A representative or employee of the government of the applicant's country of nationality (or, if the applicant is stateless, the country of last habitual residence); or
  • An individual with a pending asylum application who has not yet been interviewed.
