Happy April!
Similar to March, we kicked off this month with a steady lineup of events to serve our clients, and in particular, those experiencing serious housing conditions issues, seeking assistance with the intersection of disaster relief and heirs property matters, and those hoping for help with petition drafting so they might have a chance at clearing dismissed and not guilty charges from their records. Here's a recap:
📍Our Disaster Relief team and the Central Carolina office hosted a wills clinic at Lee County Senior Services on Monday in Sanford. In addition to serving 11 clients at scheduled appointments, we were also joined by our mobile intake unit, which helped 19 potential clients with questions and intake. Special thanks to our volunteers who helped prep documents for clients in advance of the clinic.
📍The SAS Legal team joined us on April 9th for an expunction session at their offices in Cary. Volunteers assisted 27 clients with their petition paperwork and prepared advice letters. Special thanks to Jen Garey and Anne Sherman for making this event possible!
📍On April 6, 23 Wake Forest University School of Law students joined us for their last Lawyer on the Line event of the year. Volunteers helped prepare advice letters for tenant clients experiencing housing conditions related issues.
📍NCCU School of Law hosted a three day Lawyer on the Line event the first week of April, preparing advice and guidance for our tenant clients experiencing dangerous and unsanitary housing conditions.
📍In Winston-Salem (and virtually), we celebrated Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton's participation in our Domestic Violence Protective Order Project with a joint kick off meeting. We're grateful to Allison Reid at Kilpatrick for her enthusiastic participation and leadership!
And, we wrapped up March with four additional events:
📍Wake Forest University School of Law students assisted with wills and advance directive drafting with our partner, Senior Services, Inc. at an all-day clinic at the Intergenerational Center in Winston-Salem. We were able to serve 9 clients with their help. On the same day, we had our first pro bono event - a Lawyer on the Line - with 10 High Point University School of Law students.
📍Special thanks to Smith Anderson for hosting our monthly Raleigh Pro Bono Collaborative Expunction session on the 19th.
📍Students from Harvard Law joined us for a series of clinics over three days: a wills and power of attorney clinic on March 17 and 18 and heirs property and disaster relief clinic on March 19th at the First United Methodist Church of Waynesville. The students traveled with our mobile intake unit to the Billy Graham Training Center (operated by Samaritan's Purse), with the goal of bringing more accessible resources to clients in need.
