Hey Raleigh!
We're excited to share that we've moved to our new space in Raleigh, about a ten minute drive from our previous office. Our new address is: 1425 Promise Beacon Circle, Suite 201.
Our intake, administrative, and pro bono teams still remain in our offices on Chapanoke Road.
We hope the new location will be more accessible to our staff and community members - we are right off a bus line and have ample parking for clients. Extra bonus: we have new neighbors whose missions align with helping others who need it the most.
We're hoping to hold an open house soon and would love for our volunteers to come and see our new space.

We still need volunteers for our Ask a Lawyer – WNC Disaster Recovery Hotline!
Help answer calls and provide brief legal advice and resources to WNC residents who have legal questions related to disaster recovery. Two shifts are available: 12 PM to 3 PM and 3 PM to 6 PM. Attorney volunteers and call screeners (law students, paralegals, non-attorney legal services staff) are needed. Training materials and support from staff attorneys available upon request. Virtual Lawyer on the Line Housing Conditions Event Recap

Last month, volunteers joined us across the state to prepare brief advice letters for clients facing difficult, dangerous, and unsanitary housing conditions.
In just two hours, our volunteers assisted eight clients by learning more about their housing conditions issues and providing concrete advice on how to navigate difficult housing scenarios.

It’s been a busy two months for our awesome Charlotte Triage volunteers! We started out July with a housing conditions Lawyer-on-the-Line event hosted at Dechert LLP alongside Bank of America on July 15. With volunteers from across the Charlotte legal community – including Fisher Phillips, Haynes Boone, Wells Fargo, Parker Poe and Elon Law – we were able to advise tenants on their housing conditions issues. We’re grateful to Triage Champions Julie Leopold from Dechert and Tim Hughes from Bank of America for organizing the event.
Then on July 24, another fourteen Charlotte Triage volunteers came together at Moore & Van Allen for a domestic violence/child custody clinic. Thanks to their help and dedication, our clients are now better prepared to navigate the legal system and protect their children from abuse. Special thanks to Triage Champions Brian Soja from LPL Financial and Aishaah Reed Foster from Moore & Van Allen for organizing.
Wrapping up July, Charlotte Triage volunteer attorneys from Wells Fargo, Holland & Knight, Bank of America, McGuireWoods, Nelson Mullins, Moore & Van Allen, and more counseled tenants facing eviction, providing on-the-spot practical advice and representation for clients needing immediate help at the courthouse on both July 29 and July 31. Thanks to Triage Housing Champions Mark Taylor from Wells Fargo and Bill Butler from Moore & Van Allen for recruiting for these clinics!
Starting August strong, on August 6, Womble Bond Dickinson hosted a Lawyer-on-the-Line event where attorneys, paralegals and law students from across the city joined forces to advise tenant clients on their housing conditions and repair issues. We’re grateful to Triage Housing Champions Kirsten Peterson from Womble and Kenya McNeil from Wells Fargo for coordinating!
Then on August 12 and 14, Charlotte Triage volunteer attorneys again returned to the second floor of Mecklenburg County Courthouse to provide advice and representation to tenants facing eviction. Thanks to Triage Housing Champions Chris Dickson from Cadwalader and Tim Hughes from Bank of America for recruiting!

We’ve been lucky to highlight the dedication of Raleigh attorney, Peter Robinson, over the years as he has tirelessly assisted our clients with criminal record expunctions – taking on individual representations as well as attending our half-day expunction clinics on his own time. This month is no different. Among the many cases and outcomes we could share, we had to call out two this month:
As he was sitting in the lobby of the clerk’s office in Northampton County assisting another client with an expunction petition, Peter overheard another potential client asking for help. Peter mentioned to him that he could reach out to Legal Aid of NC for assistance. After our team determined the client could qualify for our services, Peter took on his case and was able to assist with getting his felony and misdemeanor convictions and dismissed charges expunged. Thanks to Peter, this client now has a clean criminal record.
For another client, Peter also prepared expunction petitions in four counties, obtained criminal record authorizations from judges in two counties, and ultimately obtained expunction orders in all the cases. Significantly, Peter shared that her case set two legal precedents: (1) a judge ruled that simple affray was not a disqualifying offense for expunction purposes; and (2) another judge granted a motion to seal the client’s bond forfeiture case, which arose from an expunged conviction. Peter shared that he was “happy to help others who could benefit from the legal precedents this client’s case has established.”

Thank you to the class of '28!
Nearly 15% of the incoming 1L class volunteered with us on UNC Law’s Service Day.
Students attended an expunction workshop in the morning led by LANC staff members Emily Mistr JD ’06, Laurena Grissett Evans JD ’21, Jessica Luong JD ’08, Allison Constance JD ’09, and Trenor Bender.
In the afternoon and under the supervision of Allison Young ’04, SJ Hightower JD ’14, and Tricia Russ JD ’13, students helped tenants understand their rights and plan strategies for resolutions. We’re thrilled that the students could kick off their law school experience with an introduction to Legal Aid of North Carolina’s work!

The ask: Present on either (or both) topics and answer general questions (no specific legal advice is given during the presentations). Volunteers receive training and all presentations are moderated.
When: Child custody presentations are held the second Tuesday of the month; simple divorce presentations are held the third Thursday of the month. All presentations run from 2:15 to 4:30 p.m.

File Claim for Tenant Improperly Locked Out Who Lost All Belongings
Our client's landlord changed the locks on his home, illegally evicting him and causing our client to lose all of his belongings.
We are seeking a pro bono volunteer to file an affirmative claim in Rowan County Small Claims Court (conversion, unfair and deceptive trade practices, trespass, wrongful eviction). A draft complaint will be provided upon request.

Help Single Mother Get Deposit Returned
Our client paid a deposit to hold a mobile home unit. When the transaction fell through, she was owed the deposit back, and the landlord is not responding to requests for payment.
Assistance is needed demanding payment for money owed and potentially filing a claim in Small Claims Court.
