Pro Bono Update

December 2025

Happy Holidays from the Pro Bono Team

So far this year, this community of volunteers:*

❄️ Assisted us with 1,006 cases

❄️ And helped us log over 8,627 pro bono hours!

Feeling inspired to give back?

Here's our holiday wishlist:

  1. Sign up to assist a client with preparing a will or advance directive;
  2. Draft a durable power of attorney for our client, who is blind and needs the document to access benefits;
  3. Help a single mother get her deposit returned;
  4. Advise rural domestic violence survivors preparing for pro se 50B hearings;
  5. Save the Date - Virtual Domestic Violence Pro Bono Kick Off - Friday, January 23, 12-1 PM.
  6. Consider making a financial donation to Legal Aid of NC. Any donations before 12/31 will be matched!

Thank you for spreading the holiday cheer with your generosity and hard work.

Raleigh Pro Bono Collaborative Recap

November's expunction session, hosted by our partner, Smith Anderson, was our most well-attended yet. Fifteen volunteers drafted expunction paperwork for fifteen clients, helping them get one step closer to a clean record.

Interested in joining our next expunction session on January 15th?

Wake Forest University School of Law - Lawyer on the Line

Last month, WFU Law students provided advice to nine clients living in dangerous and unsanitary housing conditions.

With the volunteers' help, our clients will be better prepared to address their housing challenges and advocate for their and their families' needs.

Thanks to our Charlotte Triage Volunteers!

On December 10, fourteen volunteers wrapped up our last Lawyer on the Line event of the year through the Charlotte Triage Pro Bono Partnership.

Our amazing group included attorneys from Wells Fargo, Bradley, US Bank, and LPL Financial. Triage Housing Champions Leah Campbell and Mark Taylor assisted with planning and coordination.

Additionally, last month, a team of nine law firm and in house volunteers - Todd Stillerman, Stephanie Elliott, Brittany Mullen, Christie Dee, Courtney LaTourette, Matthew Dunand, Chassity Bobbitt, Jarel Johnson, and Nader Raja - participated in our program, sharing legal advice over the phone with Legal Aid of NC clients facing significant housing conditions challenges. Special thanks to Triage Housing Champions, Bill Butler from Moore & Van Allen and Tim Hughes from Bank of America who coordinated the event.

The following week, our volunteer attorneys participated in our eviction courthouse clinic, where, alongside our Legal Aid of NC team, volunteers provided on-the-spot legal advice to over 20 tenants facing evictions.

Thanks to Tom Woodrow, Todd Stillerman, Tia Smith, Mark Taylor, Rocio Serratos, David Griffin, Mark Henriques, and Phil Mayer for participating. We're also grateful as always to our Triage Housing Champions, Mark Henriques from Womble and Mark Taylor from Wells Fargo.

Coming in January: Opportunities to Support Survivors of Domestic Violence

As the IOLTA freeze and budget cuts have forced us to reduce services statewide, we are seeking to meet client needs with pro bono volunteers. We are looking for attorney volunteers willing to provide: (1) advice to clients remotely over the phone and (2) in court representation.

These programs will start in January, beginning with a Kickoff Presentation on Friday, January 23rd, from 12 - 1 PM.

We'd love to have you join us (and will record for those unable to attend).
