UNC School of Law - Winter Break

Wills Pro Bono Project

On December 16 and 17, as part of UNC Law’s Winter Break Pro Bono project, students served 22 senior clients in Fayetteville and Pembroke.

Clients executed over 75 documents, including wills, powers of attorney, and advance directives. We were lucky to have incredible interest for each clinic (there was a 14 person waitlist for the 16th alone!).

Thanks to our community partners and Legal Aid of NC’s own Daniel DiMaria, Tina Dicke, and Delina Locklear for assisting us with document preparation and execution as well as on-the-ground logistics.

Thanks to our Charlotte Triage Volunteers!

Volunteers gathered yesterday at Dechert for our first Lawyer on the Line event of the year! Volunteers provided pro bono legal advice over the phone to clients facing serious housing conditions challenges. Thanks to our crew of volunteers from Wells Fargo, GC AI, McGuireWoods, Duke Energy, Bank of America, and Dechert, clients will be equipped with the advice and information needed to fully assess their housing options:

And extra thanks to Triage Housing Champions Julie Leopold and Tim Hughes from Dechert and Bank of America, respectively, for coordinating the event.

Volunteer Spotlight

Mark Taylor, Wells Fargo

Charlotte

Mark Taylor, counsel at Wells Fargo, is a steadfast volunteer at both our Charlotte Triage courthouse clinics and Lawyer on the Line events.

In addition to mentoring new volunteers, Mark routinely secures big wins for our clients. After witnessing Mark in action at one of our eviction courthouse clinics, a community member shared: "I just saw one of the ... lawyers defend a client in eviction court and he was AMAZING ... your folks are here really fighting for their people!"

We are so proud of our LANC alum, who returns month after month to tirelessly advocate for and represent our tenant clients.
