Housing Conditions Lawyer on the Line Kick-Off
Last week, 12 students reached out to clients across the state to gather information about their housing repair and habitability issues. Thanks to Jacob Koelsch, Abe Waserstein, Martin Tipton, Nora Salitan, Alyssa C., Cynthia Wang, Zoey Mitzner, Ridge Ren, Nina Jeffries, Alex Neumann-Loreck, Luke Li, Holly M., and Maximilian Sander, six clients and their families will be in a better position to assess their housing options. We were lucky to be joined by our Director of Pro Bono Programs, Allison Standard Constance, and Supervising Attorney for our Disaster Relief Project, Emma Smiley (Duke Law '13), who assisted the students with brainstorming and advice letter drafting.

Ask a Lawyer - WNC Disaster Recovery Hotline Recap
56 attorneys and 46 call screeners volunteered to help survivors in Western North Carolina get answers to questions about property issues, their FEMA claims and appeals, insurance disputes, and more.
With partners Pisgah Legal Services and the North Carolina Bar Foundation, we helped 347 people, a 60% jump in clients served compared to our first WNC Disaster Recovery Hotline in June.
We are so grateful to the lawyers, paralegals, law students, and other legal professionals who gave their time to help their neighbors in need.

Charlotte Triage Pro Bono Partnership Day
Legal Aid of NC was honored to join legal services partners, law firms, and in house teams last week to celebrate the attorneys and staff who make Charlotte Triage possible.
After CLE programs on wide-ranging topics - from evictions and housing conditions to expunctions and consumer advocacy - we raised a toast to the dedicated volunteers who have donated their time, experience, and energy to make this partnership a success.
Cheers to the organizers and volunteers, and to this year's Champion of the Year, Patrick Doerr, and Volunteer of the Year, Brian Soja!

Cloud, Matthew Robertson, Sara Markov, and Robert Mabee - clients experiencing housing conditions issues were able to receive practical advice for how to navigate dangerous and unsanitary housing conditions.

Community Development Law Clinic
UNC School of Law
Chapel Hill
When two nonprofit organizations impacted by Tropical Storm Helene reached out to our Disaster Relief Project team for assistance with formation and governance questions, Tom Kelley, the Director of the Community Development Law Clinic and James Dickson Phillips, Jr. Distinguished Professor of Law at UNC School of Law immediately agreed to help.
Professor Kelley adds: “By representing these organizations, students can speak with founders, hear first-hand what kinds of issues organizations face when starting out, and make a real difference in the landscape of available resources for local communities. Assisting local nonprofits enriches students’ experiences at Carolina Law, and it also provides local nonprofits with the tools necessary to operate and deliver services directly to their neighbors and community members.”
We are so grateful to the Community Development Law Clinic for their partnership!
