Only The Wise Own It

by Dave Rauch

Philosophers throughout history have had many different interpretations of what constitutes wisdom. In Aristotle’s view, you can’t be wise if you believe you are always right and that your judgment is 100 percent accurate. Here are the four wisest phrases I know:

  • I was wrong. It takes immense courage to admit that you were wrong in a high-stress, negative situation. And I think that courage stems from true wisdom about yourself and your strengths and weaknesses.

  • I made a mistake. Personal growth requires accepting blame for provoking a negative situation. Saying you made a mistake is taking responsibility for your actions, not just your words. It takes great wisdom to recognize that the best course of action to remedy a negative situation is to admit that you played a part in it.

  • I’m sorry. One step further from the previous statements, have the courage and the wisdom to not only admit guilt but also to make reparations for it. Sometimes a simple, heartfelt “sorry” is all it takes to disperse the tension in a conflict.

  • I need help. Perhaps the wisest of them all is realizing that you can’t do it alone. Big-headed people who think they can handle every single situation on their own are not very wise to think that way because the truth is, every single person needs others to support them on their journey. Leaders don’t be afraid to lean on your colleagues or team.

As they say, “It takes a big person to admit shortcomings,” and my definition of a “big person” is a wise person – one who understands that where there is weakness, there is strength.
