Safety First - Super El Nino
by Tim Lampman
As we approach the hottest days of the year, we always want to make sure we are staying hydrated, taking breaks as needed, and doing our best when possible to avoid working in direct sun light. But the hot weather isn’t the only concern we have coming up. As most of you have heard, we are approaching a season where we are expected to experience a Super El Nino.
A Super El Nino causes a rise in sea temperature which significantly supercharges global weather shifts, heavy rainfall, and severe droughts. With the Super El Nino approaching, it is important to prepare for the storm season. Ways you can do this are knowing your commute’s flood points. Be sure to identify alternate routes and avoid low-water crossings, underpasses, creek crossings, and roads that historically flood.
It is also important to keep an emergency kit at work and in your car with items such as a rain jacket, waterproof shoes, change of clothes/socks, flashlight, power bank, basic first aid, water, snacks, and necessary personal items. You also want to make sure your vehicle is prepared. Check your tires, brakes, windshield wipers, lights, battery, and defroster, while making sure your gas tank is reasonably full. You’ll want to be ready to charge electronics before major storms as power outages can affect phones, internet, traffic signals, and workplace operations.
Lastly, if you work outdoors, make sure you have appropriate waterproof clothing, footwear with traction, eye protection, and other job-specific PPE. So please remember to be prepared for the heat and the oncoming storm season and always remember to stay safe and look out for one another.
