Non-addictive painkiller option undergoing study
The opioid epidemic can be traced back to the 1990s when doctors prescribed opioid-based medication to treat pain.
Scientists, funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, have developed a new compound that both treats pain and is non-addictive. Testing on monkeys has shown positive results that the compound preforms as designed.
Continued tests are still needed before researchers can seek approval from the Food and Drug Administration to start clinical trials in humans.
