Welcome to our new NDAA newsletter!

I'm pleased to say that our annual Summer Summit on Innovations in Prosecution was only one of our recent milestones. The Summit, which took place in Quebec City, Canada at the end of July, had over 250 attendees. It was highly praised for its educational content and networking opportunities. If you've not already done so, please mark your calendars for our 2020 Summit taking place in Denver, Colorado from July 20-21, 2020. More details on the program are coming soon.

Recently, NDAA focused on legislative efforts including the re-authorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and restoration of Pell grant eligibility for incarcerated individuals. We have also been pushing the importance of data and technology to improve the criminal justice system. Read about our exciting new campaign with Microsoft here !

Be on the lookout for the next issue of The Prosecutor magazine, which highlights mental health. If you are interested in contributing to the publication, please check out our submission requirements. News from the National Traffic Law Center

NDAA’s National Traffic Law Center (NTLC) had a busy summer. The NTLC held a national training on Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Violations in Orlando, Florida this past June. The conference addressed issues that impact traffic safety, as well as hosted a working group of Traffic Safety Resource Prosecutors (TSRPs) to examine the issue of impaired driving .

Legislative Update

After months of negotiations, the U.S. Congress passed the spending caps required by a 2011 budget deal. This paves the way for the legislature to finish the Fiscal Year 2020 appropriations bills and hopefully avoid another government shutdown. NDAA is working with lawmakers to make sure the final budget accounts for the needs of law enforcement and prosecutors.

Red Flag Laws
Following the tragedies in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio, the White House and Congress have discussed the possibility of passing a federal Red Flag law which would allow the temporary removal of an individual’s firearm(s) based on several factors. Previous attempts to pass Red Flag laws in Congress have stalled. However, a bipartisan group of senators, including Senate Judiciary Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-SC), expressed interest in exploring federal legislation mirrored on current state laws. As Congress continues this important conversation, NDAA has prepared an issue brief on state Red Flag laws to provide our members with background on the topic.

Also on National Night Out, District Attorney John Flynn of Erie County, NY joined his community at an event that welcomed Elmo as a special guest.

Praise for NDAA's Juvenile Justice Training
NDAA recently hosted our Role of the Juvenile Prosecutor training course at the National Advocacy Center in Columbia, SC from July 31 – August 2, 2019. The course was created in partnership with the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP). It provided attendees with the latest research and science, as well as best practices and guidelines in the field of juvenile justice.
