Catechetical Ministries in Motion
Santa Rosa, Lone Pine
As I just finished my last First Communion retreat for the year, at least for now, I found myself visiting the parish of Santa Rosa in Lone Pine in our High Desert Vicariate. I want to thank Fr. Douglas Walker and Sister Rachel Yourgules for the invite along with helping set up this retreat. The small group of children being prepped to receive their First Communion were very creative when it came to the craft activities that were part of the sessions of the day and I thank them for their attentiveness.
Along with speaking to them about First Reconciliation and of course the Eucharist and the significance of receiving the Body of Christ, I always like to start with reminding them of their Baptism. Sharing with them that moment in which their faith journey began even as babies. And when I speak about Baptism, I always make sure to lead into how the community of the faithful, in which they have been brought up through their journey, has and always will have the potential to continue to guide and support them, along with their parents and godparents, as they grow in the faith into young adulthood.
During the first years of a child's life, all learning begins to develop. It is in the family context that the child pronounces their first words, takes their first steps, learns to pray and to be a friend of Jesus. School, friends, and the social environment in which they develop will also influence their learning.
