Stories Of Our Diocese

Homebound Ministry: St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Bakersfield

Our Diocese is filled with ministries that bring together the parish community they serve in. One of the ministries is known as Ministry to the Homebound. This ministry brings communion to the sick and homebound – whether it’s in homes, retirement communities or hospitals.

Colleen Scanlon of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, Bakersfield began doing Ministry to the Homebound in 2012 and brought it to her parish in 2015.

Colleen, who has a special heart for those suffering or vulnerable, believes it is important to provide spiritual help for them and their family through Homebound Ministry.

Diocese of Fresno's Legacy For Supporting Farmworkers

Looking Back At The 1948 Plane Crash Near Coalinga, CA

After the recent participation of Bishop Brennan and Bishop Emeritus Ochoa at the United Farm Workers March for the Governor’s signature, let’s look back at a past event.

In 1948, a U.S. Immigration plane crash happened near Coalinga, CA with no survivors. News reports swarmed the tragedy yet failed to name the 28 migrant farmworkers who died in the crash - despite publicly naming the pilot, etc. Their gravestone read, “28 Mexican Citizens who died in an airplane accident near Coalinga, California on Jan. 25, 1948. R.I.P.”

Congress Volunteers 2022

This coming October 7, 8, and 9 we will once again be blessed to be able to offer our Diocesan Congress again for the first time since before the pandemic. Click on the link for more information: Diocese of Fresno Congress and Youth Day 2022

The Diocesan Congress is an event and opportunity for formation and gathering for all the faithful across our Diocese and beyond. In the past, many have believed that it is only an event for catechists or ministry leaders but given the diverse topics and sessions that are offered, along with Holy Mass on behalf of our bishop, it is really an opportunity for gathering, formation, and worship for all who wish to attend.

But with any great event comes a great necessity, for helping hands, for VOLUNTEERS! I have been blessed once again this year in coordinating the volunteers that support the process of this event during its three-day span starting with a Friday which focuses on administrators within a parish, congress gathering which is on a Saturday and ending on Sunday with Youth Day. This is an event that cannot take place without the help and support of individuals that are willing to give of their time and talents in serving the people of our diocese in one of the biggest events that we offer.

COVID-19 Updates

Exposure And Precautions

If you were exposed to the virus that causes COVID-19 or have been told by a healthcare provider or public health authority that you were exposed, there are steps that you should take, regardless of your vaccination status or if you have had a previous infection.

 Steps include:

  • Watch for symptoms for 10 days
  • Wear a mask around others indoors for 10 days
  • Test 5 days after exposure, or sooner if you have symptoms
  • If you test positive, follow isolation guidance
  • Take extra precautions for 10 days when around people more likely to get very sick

If you have COVID-19, you can spread the virus to others. Regardless of vaccination status, you should isolate from others. You should also isolate if you are sick and suspect that you have COVID-19 but do not yet have test results.

If you test positive for COVID-19, stay home for at least 5 days and isolate from others in your home. You are likely most infectious during these first 5 days.

  • Wear a high-quality mask if you must be around others at home and in public.
  • Do not go places where you are unable to wear a mask.
  • Do not travel.
  • Stay home and separate from others as much as possible.
