Msgr. Dreiling's Farewell Message
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
I have come to the age when it's time for me to step aside from the daily challenges of parish administration and pastoral responsibilities to begin a new path forward to serve the Lord as a humble disciple and priest. Bishop Brennan has graciously accepted my request to resign from the pastoral care of the Shrine of St. Therese and to begin my retirement journey on August 1st. I have been privileged to serve this wonderful community of faith for a little over five years. There have been many challenges and even more blessings and graces along the way, and together we have built a community dedicated to God's glory and for service to one another.

|
Please welcome your new pastor, Father Ivan Hernandez-Melchor, with the warmth and love and cooperation you have given me. I am deeply and forever grateful to all of you. Thank you for the privilege and grace to serve you and to accompany you as your pastor. This time together at St. Therese will always remain in my heart. Pray for me as I promise to do for all of you.
Farewell, Msgr. Ray.

Knights of Columbus
St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church, Bakersfield
The St. Philip the Apostle Council 9530 of the Knights of Columbus in Bakersfield recently conducted fraternal activities to benefit non-profit organizations in the community.
Between Mother's Day and Father's Day, the council conducted an online drive that raised $800 for the Bakersfield Pregnancy Center through the Knights of Columbus' Initiative Aid and Support After Pregnancy (ASAP).
On July 22, the council donated items for a breakfast feed at St. Vincent de Paul Society as well as prepared and served the meals for more than 150 homeless people. Additionally, a pallet with cases of bottled water was donated to the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
Did you know? Four years ago, St. Philip Council 9530 was honored by the California State Council as the Council of the Year from among 700 councils in the state.

World Youth Day
Send-Off Mass
World Youth Day is an event that takes place every three years, with young people from all over the world gathering to give praise, to learn, to meet one another and to grow in faith. It ends with a Mass with the Holy Father. This year, over 600,000 young people are gathering in Lisbon, Portugal!
The World Youth Day events are from August 1 – 6, but many pilgrims went early to enjoy the sights and participate in cultural events specifically planned for them.
On Saturday, July 15, many pilgrims from our diocese gathered at St. Paul Catholic Newman Center to get to know each other and participate in Mass celebrated by Bishop Brennan. Friends and family attended Mass, where Bishop Brennan gave them a special blessing and they each received a cross to carry with them on their journey.
Let us keep all pilgrims in our prayers as they live this transformative pilgrimage!

Catechetical Ministries in Motion
New PCL Boot Camp - North
This past Saturday, we were welcomed into the parish of St. Joachim in Madera to offer one of our annual Ministry Boot Camps for new parish catechetical leaders. We would like to thank the Parish Ministries Coordinator, Lucy Gomez, for working with us in helping set-up and her continued support of formation and of course being our contact person for this event. We would also like to thank Fr. John Warburton for the use of his parish facilities so our event could take place as the North Site of our Boot Camp.
The primary focus of the Boot Camp is to share new information with Parish Catechetical Leadership (PCL) along with an opportunity to learn the skills any Catechetical Leader should know regarding both the Administrative side and Ministry side of Parish Catechetical Leadership. From topics regarding time management, diocesan forms and communication to program development and catechist formation, the goal is to share with new ministry leadership certain things that can support them in their new roles and allow them to meet and network with other leadership within their area.
| |
For those that could not attend the PCL Boot Camp this past Saturday, you can still join us on August 12 at the South Site in Bakersfield at St. Francis of Assisi Parish.
Please click on the link for more information and to register CLICK HERE. We look forward to seeing you.

Protect yourself against Mosquito Bites
Practice the "Three D's"
The Fresno County Department of Public Health recommends practicing the "Three D's" to protect against mosquito bites.
1.DETER – Apply insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR3535 according to label instructions. Repellents keep the mosquitoes from biting you. Insect repellents should not be used on children under two months of age.
2. DAWN AND DUSK – Mosquitoes usually bite in the early morning and evening, so it is important to wear proper clothing and repellent if outside during these times. Make sure that your doors and windows have tight-fitting screens to keep out mosquitoes. Repair or replace screens that have tears or holes.
3. DRAIN – Mosquitoes lay their eggs on standing water. Eliminate all sources of standing water on your property, by emptying flowerpots, old car tires, buckets, and other containers.
