Looking Back at the UFW's March

On August 11, 2022, Bishop Brennan and Bishop Emeritus Ochoa participated in the United Farm Worker's March for the Governor's signature in support of AB2183 to be signed into law.

The UFW's march was a 24-day, 355-mile march where our Bishops joined the marchers from St. Anthony Mary Claret Church in Fresno to Calwa Park.

AB 2183 was signed and approved by the Governor on September 28, 2022.

Let us continue to pray for and support our farmworkers.

National Gathering on Christian Initiation

The Vision of RCIA

On August 1-3, Liturgy Training Publications hosted their annual National Gathering Christian Initiation at Loyola University in Chicago. Three representatives from our diocese attended: Kate Mallam from Holy Spirit in Fresno, Lloyd Flores from Holy Family in Kingsburg and Rosie Hernandez, Director of Formation and Evangelization. It was a wonderful, intensive few days focusing on the Vision of RCIA. Time was spent in reflection and study of the Rite, with much prayer, singing and fellowship.

The plan is to return to Fresno and build a small core team to help parish teams continue to learn and grow, and be prepared to offer resources and workshops when the newly translated Order of Christian Initiation of Adults is published.

If you are interested in hearing more about future plans for this ministry, please contact Rosie at [email protected].

Catechetical Ministries

Catechetical Ministries in Motion

St. Joseph Church, Avenal

Last week I had the opportunity to visit the parish of St. Joseph in Avenal. I want to thank Fr. Oscar Anaya for the invitation to share a talk with potential extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion regarding the ministry and service itself and how it connects us in a more intimate manner with the celebration of the Liturgy. I also wanted to thank those that attended and the hospitality I received on their behalf.

Even though the parish of St. Joseph in Avenal is a small community, the attentiveness and enthusiasm of those present was a pleasure in the evening we shared. Aside from being able to provide elements of instruction and general guidance as to the role and service of the extraordinary minister of Holy Communion, I also wanted to convey the connectedness this ministry entails regarding our lives in general, the life outside the church walls.

The Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy (CSL), the first document promulgated by the Second Vatican Council, reaffirms that Christ is always present in his Church, especially in his liturgy celebrations. Christ is present when the Church prays and sings, in the proclamation of the word, and in the person of the minister. Finally, the Council emphasized that Christ is present above all under the Eucharistic species (CSL, no.7).

And it was in the person of the minister and those that partake in this service that I wanted to emphasize the importance of the presence of Christ wherever they find themselves. That our actions of reverence and devotion do not only apply within the setting of the Liturgy service but that it should also extend throughout the life we live in testimony of the faith we proclaim throughout our communities. A testimony in an ever-expanding presence of Christ through the ministry to those we serve and every capacity of which is required of us.

Hearts Ablaze

Young Adult Retreat

STYCC invites all Young Adults (Ages 18-35) to join them as they talk about how easy it is to be on fire for the Lord when you're at an event like a retreat, rally, or Congress and you feel rejuvenated and you're full of new ideas and plans only to lose a little steam when you get back home.

How can we keep that going even when it feels like the spark is dying out? Let's encourage one another as we navigate the realities of life and how that affects us in our discipleship and ministry.

Come together to connect in fellowship with other young adults as we figure out how to keep our Hearts Ablaze from September 8-10, 2023 at the Santa Teresita Youth Conference Center in Three Rivers!
