Día de los Reyes Magos with the Farmworkers and Knights of Columbus
Thank you to our Campesinos!
The Knights of Columbus hosted a special Mass, followed by dinner at the Cardinal Newman Hall this past Saturday (January 7) to thank farmworkers (campesinos) in the Fresno area for doing the hard work to bring food to our tables. These workers and their families were treated to a bilingual Mass celebrated by Bishop Brennan and Father Byron. After Mass there was dinner catered by Pardini’s, a guitar trio, lively Baile Folklorico (traditional Mexican dances), singing á la the late, great Vicente Fernández, gift certificates and toys for the children. The keynote speaker at the dinner was Fresno State President, Saúl Jiménez-Sandoval, who shared his farmworker roots and role and how that education plays in opening opportunities for the campesino youth.
The celebration was inspired by the work of Father Albert Vasquez, friend of Fathers Byron and Paul (and fellow Claretion priest), who for decades has ministered to the needs of farmworkers in the Fresno area. Thanks go out to Knights of Columbus councils from southern California for assisting in fundraising for the event, and Knights on Bikes California for bringing their fine-looking motorcycles for the families to see and enjoy. A special thanks to our own Linda Ram and her staff, parishioner Tom Kane, and Newman Council 9445 and Master Don Gentleman (St. Helens Church) Council 11335 for coordinating this event and providing the Knights in costume who did their best impression of the Three Kings.

The Catechetical Corner
Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children
Through our natural intelligence and through Divine Revelation, we realize the value of the most basic of all gifts that is life. The dignity and worth of human life do not only depend on our actions but also in the knowledge of the fact that we are made in the image and likeness of God. This is what the sanctity of life is all about. It is an inestimable and permanent value, which is not subject to conditions.
According to the USCCB, “The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), no. 373, designates January 22 as a particular day of prayer and penance, called the ‘Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children’: ‘In all the Dioceses of the United States of America, January 22 (or January 23, when January 22 falls on a Sunday) shall be observed as a particular day of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life and of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion.’”
In recognition of this dignity, this January 23 we observe this day of prayer. It is a date to unite in prayer and raise awareness for respect for human life from conception and throughout pregnancy. This commemoration is also an invitation to pray for women in vulnerable conditions, so that they receive all the necessary attention from the moment they discover that they are pregnant.
