National Gathering On Christian Initiation

Evaluating And Revitalizing The RCIA In Your Parish

On July 12-14, Rosie Hernandez, Director of Formation and Evangelization, and Deacon Pete and Patty Marquez from Holy Spirit parish attended the National Gathering on Initiation in Chicago.

The theme of the event, sponsored by Liturgical Training Publications, was "Evaluating and Revitalizing the RCIA in Your Parish."

The conference gave insights and skills to guide and evaluate the RCIA in parishes. Bringing new ideas and activities not only enlivens the RCIA but parish life as well.

Rosie was part of the planning team for the National Gathering on Initiation and served as a speaker and facilitator.

This enlightening event gave all attendees a new vision and energy to bring home and share.

Fourth Task Of Catechesis: Teaching To Pray

Everything we do must begin and end in prayer. As Christ Himself taught us, "Pray without ceasing." Whether it is frequent attendance at Mass, through a vocation or ministry, the rosary, meditation, spiritual reflections, impromptu prayers throughout the day, the life of a Catholic must be permeated by prayer. Any true catechesis must involve prayer in every lesson. Prayer is necessary for salvation.

Prayer within a catechetical setting is more than putting aside some time to pray or a way to begin and close a lesson. It needs to permeate the class.

Quick Catechesis

Incorporating Prayer Into The Classroom

Here are some practical tips for praying in faith and proclaiming our faith within catechesis.

· Gather catechists before class to pray, if that will work in your situation, or give them a prayer they can say individually for class before the children arrive.

· Check what the catechist's manual says about age group abilities for being taught about different types of prayer.

· Have posters with the prayers to display in the week they are taught and keep them for several weeks.
