Discovering Culture Through a Brief History of Cinema (new!)
GECs: 3
February 1 - March 29
Cultural competency is defined as the ability to understand, appreciate, and interact with people from cultures or belief systems different from one’s own and is developed through experiences. In an age where cultural occurrences could be abundant but currently physically prohibitive, looking at cinema could provide an insight into a culture that one could not experience otherwise. By examining major time periods and seminal works of film history, students will be exposed to a wide variety of world cultures. Cinema is an art form that is a direct reflection of its society and is a rather quick (typically 1.5 to 3 hours) and accessible way to learn about the inner workings of any culture. Students will gain insights not just from understanding the impact of the industry on a country but also the importance of the visual voice of this nation’s minorities.

Evidence-Based Teaching Practices Across Disciplines
GECs: 3

In this course, you will learn the theory behind evidence-based teaching practices, and explore ways to implement evidence-based practices (EBP) across disciplines. Participants will have an opportunity to reflect and evaluate how their current approaches align with these methods as well as consider how they may adjust their practices based on research on learning.

Equity Teaching Academy: Redesign for Equity (new!)

March 10 - May 5
“Redesign for Equity” is the third course in a series of the inaugural offering of the Equity Teaching Academy. This course prompts faculty to consider institutional and course-level data as they envision ways to redesign aspects of their courses around equity pedagogies.

Participation in the first two courses of the series is not required for registration.

AEMy Is Here to Help! Implementing Equity Practices Using the Applying Equity Matrix (AEMy)

The Applying Equity Matrix is an interactive tool that allows instructors to review inclusive and equitable classroom practices in six categories: accessibility, belonging, engagement, flexibility, humanization, and transparency. In this workshop, we’ll discuss the importance of each of the six categories, navigate the interactive AEMy tool, and help participants identify small changes they can make to their courses to amplify equity and inclusion.

Practical Ways to Use Google Forms

Google Forms is a free online tool that is part of Harper’s Google Workspace platform. This easy to use tool can be utilized by faculty to engage students and evaluate their learning.

This workshop will introduce you to the basics of Google Forms, along with practical ideas for use in your course.

Using GoReact to Create Video Assignments in Blackboard

GoReact is a tool that allows students to record or upload videos right into Blackboard, which you can then watch and give time-stamped text, audio, or video feedback. This is a fantastic tool for video/audio responses to prompts, student/group presentations, language/pronunciation practice, skills demonstration, and more. In this workshop, you will hear about a variety of ways Harper faculty are already using GoReact, and will learn how to easily set up, collect and grade GoReact assignments within Blackboard. At the end of the workshop, you will get to try setting up, reviewing, and grading an assignment in a practice Blackboard shell.

Google Assignments and Blackboard: Easing the Workflow

Google Assignments is an integration between Blackboard and Google Docs which allows instructors to distribute a Google assignment and grade student work all from within Blackboard. In this workshop you will learn how to setup a Google Assignment in Blackboard and provide additional collaboration opportunities for students within Harper’s Google Workspace.

Become an Ally Advocate: Improve the Accessibility of Course Materials with Ally for Blackboard

Ally is a tool in Blackboard that provides easy to follow guidance on how to correct accessibility issues within your course. Ally also gives students the ability to download course content in a format that meets their needs. With the launch of Ally, the Academy has introduced the chance to become an Ally Advocate! Ally Advocates are recognized for their ability to leverage the Blackboard Ally tool to improve the accessibility, quality, and usability of course content for all students. Ally Advocates will be awarded a badge and 1.0 CEUs for completing a chosen pathway in the Ally Checklist. This badge can then be shared through various platforms to show verification of completing training and criteria for course accessibility.

Enacting Equity Series

The Enacting Equity Series uses sections of the Enacting Equity Guidelines to direct professional development along four axes of inclusive teaching: self-reflection, introductory information, course content, and assessment and evaluation. In each workshop, participants will reflect on how aspects of their teaching are shaped by various forms of inequity and apply inclusive teaching practices to address equity gaps.
