Diane K. Newman, DNP, ANP-BC, FAAN, BCB-PMD is Adjunct Professor of Urology in Surgery, Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. She is Co-Director of the Penn Center for Continence and Pelvic Health, Division of Urology, University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, in Philadelphia.  

Education & Certification: Dr. Newman received a Doctor of Nursing Practice from Thomas Jefferson University, a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania, and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from La Salle University, all in Philadelphia. She is certified as an adult nurse practitioner by the American Nurses 
Credentialing Center and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. She is also Board Certified in Biofeedback for Pelvic Muscle Dysfunction from the Biofeedback Certification Institute of America. 

Experience:   Dr. Newman has 30+ years’ experience practicing as a urology nurse and continence advanced practice provider. Since 2000, she has practiced in the Division of Urology at PENN Medicine. Her current clinical practice involves the evaluation, treatment, and management of urinary incontinence and related pelvic disorders including the use of biofeedback for pelvic floor disorders and catheters and other devices in the management of bladder dysfunction. Dr. Newman’s patient population is both male and female.
Past clinical practices include incontinence specialty management in home care and
long-term care settings. 

Research: Currently, Dr. Newman is involved in federally-funded research including: Principal Investigator (PI), University of Pennsylvania site, PENN+PLUS Clinical Center, Prevention of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms (PLUS) Research Consortium, 1U01DK106892-01. She is a co-investigator on the NIH Pelvic Floor Disorders Network Clinical Sites (1U10HD069010-01). She was a co-investigator on the Perioperative Post-Prostatectomy Incontinence Home Telehealth Program, VA Merit Grant. She has served as a University of Pennsylvania site PI on Translating Unique Learning for Incontinence Prevention: The TULIP Project, (R01NR012011, NINR/NIH) and on Group Learning Achieves Decreased Incidents of Lower Urinary Symptoms (GLADIOLUS), 
1R01AG043383-01A1, NIA/NIH. Her research has been published in prestigious professional journals (e.g. JAMA) and received awards, most recently at the 2017 European Association of Urologic Nursing (2nd Prize for Best Research Poster) and at the 2017 International Continence Society (Conservative Therapy Research Award).

Expert & Government Panels, Professional Leadership:   Dr. Newman has held multiple leadership positions in professional groups and government-sponsored expert panels over the last decade. She was a member of the panel of experts of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Service’s Scope and Severity of Nursing Care Deficiencies in long term care on “Guidance to Surveyors on Incontinence and Catheters-Tag F315.” She was the co-chair of the 1996 Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Clinical Practice Guideline on Urinary Incontinence: Acute and Chronic Management. Dr. Newman served as the consumer representative to the FDA Advisory Committee, Gastroenterology/Urology Medical Devices Panel from 1999-2002. She was the Chairperson of the on Continence Promotion, Education & Primary Prevention for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th International Consultation on Incontinence. She was the Chair of the International Continence Society (ICS) Continence Promotion Committee (2003-2009).

Awards : Dr. Newman has received many awards and accolades throughout her professional career. She is the recipient of the American Journal of Nursing 2002 Gerontologic Nursing Book Award for the 1st Edition of Managing and Treating Urinary Incontinence. That same year, Dr. Newman was presented with the Continence Care Champion Award by the National Association for Continence (NAFC). As the urology nurse expert to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Nursing Evidence-Based Practice CAUTI Group task force, Dr. Newman assisted this group in developing nursing algorithms for management of indwelling catheters, RN driven protocol for catheter removals, and implementation of evidence practice for nursing care of indwelling catheters and prevention of catheter-associated UTIs (CAUTIs). In 2015, this task force received the Quality & Patient Safety Award of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for the Development, Implementation and Evaluation of a System-Wide Nurse Driven Removal Protocol for Indwelling Urinary Catheters (Foleys).

Consumer Advocacy:   She has extensive experience in informing consumers about pelvic floor disorders and continence promotion. She’s been quoted frequently as an incontinence expert in top-tier media outlets including The New York Times, USA Today, O Magazine, Delta Sky Miles Magazine, and Prevention. Diane Newman’s AJN 2003 article on “Stress Urinary Incontinence in Women” was cited by the New York Times Personal Health Column. She was interviewed in the August 2007 issue of Oprah Winfrey’s O magazine and the January 2009 issue of Ladies Home Journal. Dr. Newman’s clinical practice was featured in the June 5, 2008 issue of USA Today. She has been an expert WebMD’s Moderated Health Exchange on Incontinence and is currently a content expert and editor on www.Urotoday.com. 

Educator:   Diane Newman is a respected educator and an internationally known speaker on the topic of urinary incontinence and pelvic floor dysfunction, non-surgical treatments and the use of devices and products for the management of incontinence. She has been invited to speak in Hong Kong, Dubai, Singapore, Manila, Sapporo, Yokohama, Florence, Monaco, Edinburgh, Monte Carlo, Halifax, Montreal, Malaysia, and Bournemouth. At the request of the Chinese Health Authority in Hong Kong, Dr. Newman developed a urologic nursing curriculum for nurses to be certified as urology nurses the and continues to provide observation and educational training for nurses in Hong Kong and mainland China.  

Publications:   Dr. Newman is the associate editor of Neurourology Urodynamics Journal. A prolific writer, she has written and presented more than 75 scientific papers, chapters, and articles on the assessment, treatment, and management of incontinence, with an emphasis on the continence nurse specialist’s role. She has authored The Urinary Incontinence Sourcebook, Managing and Treating Urinary Incontinence (1st and 2nd editions), Overcoming Overactive Bladder and a coauthor of Fast Facts: Bladder Disorders. She is the lead editor of the 1st edition of the Society of Urologic Nurses and 
Associates Core Curriculum for Urologic Nursing and of Clinical Application of Urologic Catheters, Devices and Products.

Workshop Description:   This workshop will provide a comprehensive review of pelvic floor disorders and rehabilitation treatments including pelvic floor muscle training and the use of electrical stimulation. Emphasis will be placed on using equipment (EMG & manometry) for augmenting these interventions. Presentation of case studies will be part of the course. Workshop tuition is $795.00.
