Where In the World Is PPL'S Cultural Programming?
We've had lots of questions about how we can present cultural programs while our building is under construction, and the answer is, with a little help from our friends! Our programming for the 2018-19 season will be presented in collaboration with some of the many cultural and educational organizations doing important work in our community, and we are so grateful to them for offering both their expertise and their programming spaces. Our October collaborative partners include
Trinity Repertory Company
,
Wage House
,
RISD Museum
, and
Cranston Public Library
. We hope you will take this opportunity to get out and about and join us for upcoming events! (see details below)

COMMUNITY PROGRAMS
Context & Conversation: Pride & Prejudice
co-presented with Trinity Repertory Company and Wage House
|
|
Thursday, October 18
7:30 - 9:15 pm
Kate Hamill’s adaptation of
Pride & Prejudice
revels in Jane Austen’s brilliant wit, and reveals her talents as an armchair anthropologist, one whose characters deftly and hilariously demonstrate that while sexual attraction and emotional compatibility may be credited with initiating the course of a romance, its success or failure will likely be determined by a combination of economics, family structure, marriage law, and social theories of gender-determined behavior (however dubious). And while we may think ourselves less encumbered by societal strictures than were Austen’s heroines, Hamill gives us plenty of opportunity to recognize the absurdities of unspoken expectations and cultural contradictions that characterize our own 21st-century norms of courtship.
Join us for a spirited conversation about women defying expectations, flouting conventions, entertaining possibilities, indulging desires, laughing wantonly, and daring to improvise.
Context & Conversation
is a series co-produced and co-presented by
Trinity Repertory Company
and
Providence Public Library
. Each Context & Conversation event brings together scholars, artists, and community practitioners to discuss the themes and ideas found in the play currently on stage at Trinity Rep, and to consider where we find those themes and ideas at work in our own community. All Context & Conversation events are free and open to the public, and while the play is the inspiration for the Context & Conversation event, the conversation doesn’t depend on the play; you do not need to see the play to attend and participate in the discussion. Each Context & Conversation event takes place in a community setting related to the theme of the play, see a list of dates and locations
here
.
Free and open to the public, reservations requested;

COMMUNITY PROGRAMS
Reading Our Public School Architecture, co-presented with
Cranston Public Library
|
|
Monday, October 29
6 - 7:30 pm
at Cranston Public Library,
140 Sockanossett Cross Road
Join us for a public conversation with historic preservation consultant Ned Connors, artist and educator Andrew Grover, and Cranston Historical Society President Sandra M. Moyer; PPL Programs & Exhibitions Director Christina Bevilacqua will moderate.
Our public schools are designed to exemplify and communicate the values we want our children to attain while attending them, and they reflect the realities and aspirations of the era in which they were built. As such, they are some of the most fundamental structures in our architectural and civic landscapes. Yet we rarely stop to consider them, until we decide that they no longer meet our needs. Artist Andrew Grover has been using LEGO to recreate some of Rhode Island's iconic but now-empty school buildings in order to bring our attention to what they can tell us about the history of education, architecture, and civic life in the communities they served. Join us for a conversation to consider how our public school buildings serve as shared cultural landmarks, how their construction reflects the social aspirations of their era, and what it means, and what we should do when we decide that a well-built school in good condition is no longer useful.
Free and open to the public!
