Second semester is off to a good start, and we're definitely settled in and have great routines. I’ve enjoyed meeting one-one-one with all students over the past month, and am again impressed with their resilience during this time of online learning.
All BHS choirs will combine with the choirs from Kamiak, Steilacoom, and Franklin Pierce High Schools for a collaborative workshop and festival experience, culminating in an online performance of Andrew Ramsey's arrangement of "Hope Lingers On". Dr. Angela Kasper from Western Washington University led a combined workshop with the choirs from all 4 high schools last week. It was an amazing learning experience and so cool to see all the energy and interaction amongst the students.
We are working on bringing in more guest artists to do some workshops, including the composer Hyowon Wooof (who arranged the Korean song "Arirang" that we are working on). This is a great time to reach out to and collaborate with musicians from around the world!
Vocal Jazz participated in the DeMeiro Jazz Festival last week, including a workshop with jazz vocalist Gretchen Parlato and a virtual performance of "Just the Two of Us", combined with other participating schools. We’ll share a recording when available.

Register for the 2021 All-City Band
Registration is now open for the 2021 All-City Band. This is a wonderful all-school summer marching band that, under normal circumstances, rehearses four days a week in the evenings at Memorial Stadium and performs at neighborhood and community parades, especially those related to Seafair. They are preparing as though this will be a normal summer but will adjust plans as additional guidance comes out from the CDC, OSPI, SPS, and Seafair.
Membership will be open to students in the graduating classes of 2020-2025. They are not collecting any tuition at this time as the final tuition price will be adjusted depending on how much of the summer they are able to run. (If there are fewer events this summer they may run the program fewer weeks and would then charge less tuition. Or if they are not using school buses, that could also decrease the tuition price).
Right now it is critically important that those considering participating register via the online registration at https://www.allcityband.org/registration. This will help them to know how many students to plan for and to do the necessary thinking outside of the box to accommodate everyone. Please help spread the word. It would be unfortunate for All-City Band to cancel due to low enrollment and then find out after the fact that there were a lot of folks planning to participate who just didn't sign up. For more information, contact mjpimpleton@seattleschools.org.
