Solo Ensemble Festival a Success
|
|
Congratulations to the 22 Ballard Music students who participated in this year’s Elliot Bay Region Solo and Ensemble Festival. These students prepared video presentations at home that were adjudicated by clinicians from around the State. All Ballard students received ratings of either I (Superior) or II (Excellent), and 12 students either won their category or received 1st or 2nd alternate! We are incredibly proud of the hard work and perseverance of all of the students who participated.

PPE Has Arrived!
Specialized masks and instrument covers will be distributed to students so they can begin to play together ASAP!
Symphonic Band, Concert Band, and Wind Ensemble
All classes are working on a big project for the final concert - a marching band version of the song “This Too Shall Pass” by the band OK Go. According to Mr. Gillespie "the piece is really quirky and fun, and the lyrics are SO appropriate for this year that I honestly feel it should be the anthem of 2020!" Check out the official video:

Jazz Band
Last week, BHS film students recorded Jazz 1 playing "Warm Breeze" by Sammy Nestico. Stay tuned for video.
Jazz 1 played two sets of jazz classics at Tom Douglas Serious Takeout brunch last Sunday. If you missed it, photos and video are coming soon.
Jazz Rehearsals
Virtual rehearsals for Jazz Bands will continue as usual:
- Jazz 1: Virtually, Monday/Friday am 7:30 am
- Jazz 2: Virtually, Tuesday/Thursday 7:30 am
There will be no in-person class on Wednesday due to district rules. Stay tuned for possible in-person Jazz 1 and 2 classes throughout the rest of the school year.

We had a successful hosting of Solo and Ensemble Festival - 22 Entries. Twelve placed in their categories. Ballard had a great showing!
Choirs have been doing well. It’s great to be in person. There are few challenges, but it's so much better than not being in person at all.
We are all working on videos for the spring concert. We're going to have a zoom watch party at 7:00 PM on Thursday, June 3 to celebrate the seniors and get everyone together.
Vocal Jazz is planning a solo night Wednesday, June 9 at 7:30 PM. We've hired a professional combo and the kids are currently choosing their pieces. One of the students will be hosting on their parent's backyard deck. TBD on if parents can attend, but if not, we will livestream the event.
On May 12th, the Ballard Choirs were honored to spend the morning learning with Canadian musicians Suba Sankaran and Dylan Bell. They presented a workshop on South Indian singing and improvisation styles, utilizing diverse styles of music from Bollywood to the Beatles and Paul Simon. It was incredibly informative, inspiring, and a ton of fun.
Placement auditions for next year’s choirs will begin in early June.
The 4 directors met with the Ballard Foundation members last week to talk about Ballard Performing Arts’ future needs, and how the Ballard Foundation can help with funding. There is some great new energy from the foundation’s Performing Arts committee, and we are excited to see how this partnership moves forward.
|
|
All Orchestras are continuing to work on rehearsing and recording pieces for the final concert on June 4 and the virtual Pocketgrass performance in June (TBD).
Fiddlers meet every Tuesday at 6:30pm: All are welcome to join!

Spring 2022: Beauty and the Beast Musical
Revisit Broadway's modern classic, Disney's Beauty and the Beast, featuring music from the beloved animated film.
Spring 2022: A Mid-summer Night’s Dream
In one of William Shakespeare’s most popular comedies, Theseus and Hippolyta prepare to marry, a misunderstanding erupts amongst lovers, and an acting troupe prepares for the stage—all under the watchful eyes of mischievous fairies.
More fabulous theatre is in Ballard’s future!
