A New Bridge Rises: Related DNT Closures This Weekend
Halloween is right around the corner, and our latest news may seem like a mean trick, but we promise the outcome will be a treat. This weekend, the Dallas North Tollway (DNT) between Spring Creek Parkway and the Sam Rayburn Tollway (SRT) in Plano will be closed as crews install the concrete deck on the Tennyson Parkway bridge over the tollway. It's one of the final steps toward completing the bridge reconstruction.
Crews began tearing down the older bridge and rebuilding it in the spring of 2016, and NTTA adopted Tennyson the goat as the mascot for all our construction-related closures.
Don't be fooled by the bat mask. Tennyson just wanted a cool Halloween costume like all the other "kids" out there.
By the end of this year, the Tennyson Parkway bridge will be open to traffic in its final configuration, with six lanes (three eastbound and three westbound) and two turn lanes onto Dallas Parkway (the DNT frontage road).
During this weekend's closure, construction crews will also continue building retaining walls, repairing main lanes and pushing forward on many other construction tasks for the additional lanes coming to the tollway. Completing that work during this weekend's closure will help eliminate the need for additional weeks of lane closures.
While you prepare for your harvest festivals and Halloween parties, remember to plan your route through Plano accordingly this weekend.
Closure details:
Beginning at 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20, crews will begin closing the tollway between Spring Creek Parkway and the SRT, including the direct-connector ramps from the SRT to the southbound DNT and from the northbound DNT to the SRT. The DNT will be completely shut down throughout the area by midnight.
Police officers will assist with the closures and will be stationed at the entrance ramps to prevent drivers from entering the construction area. All work will be completed, and this section of the DNT will be reopened to traffic by 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 23.

NTTA Receives International Award for Anti-Texting Prevention Efforts
Red Thumb Program Gains Recognition
The North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA) has been recognized with a global excellence award for social responsibility from the International Bridge, Tunnel and Turnpike Association (IBTTA) for its "Red Thumb" anti-texting-and-driving efforts. The award was presented to NTTA during IBTTA's 85th Annual Meeting and Exhibition in September.
IBTTA, the largest worldwide tolling association, describes the award winners as "revolutionizing mobility for drivers around the globe by implementing cutting-edge solutions to 21st century transportation challenges."
Driving distractions fall into three fundamental categories: visual (eyes off the road), manual (hands off the wheel) and cognitive (mind off the road). Texting while driving is especially dangerous as it combines all three bad behaviors. At any given moment, 660,000 drivers across America are doing it.
This scenario spurred NTTA into action in 2015, with a safety campaign called "Spreading Awareness of the Dangers of Driving 'Intexticated'," urging drivers to make some part of their thumbs red as a reminder to keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road at all times.
NTTA and dozens of municipal, transportation and community partners have distributed more than 100,000
NTTA-branded red thumb bands bearing the reminder 'W82TXT.'
