Progress Update: March 2019

Dear Colleagues,

Infants in nearly 100 countries across the world now have access to rotavirus vaccines and an estimated 54 million are vaccinated annually.  There are now four globally available rotavirus vaccines, with several promising new products on the horizon. Yet many countries have not moved forward with plans to introduce rotavirus vaccine and those that have introduced often face coverage gaps, leaving 81 million infants unvaccinated.

With breakthroughs in our knowledge about rotavirus disease and vaccine impact, coupled with significant changes in the global supply of vaccine, an update to the ROTA Council's white paper on rotavirus  is due. Below, we provide an overview of what the new briefing materials will include in order to support your work in protecting infants around the world against rotavirus disease.

Sincerely,

Mathu Santosham
Chair, ROTA Council

Rotavirus Disease and Immunization: The Evidence in Brief

The ROTA Council is hard at work producing a seven-part series of briefs covering epidemiology and disease burden, broad impact of early childhood diarrhea, economic costs of rotavirus disease, available products, impact of vaccination, introduction and coverage status, and safety. We look forward to sharing the briefs with you in the coming months.

Current Vaccine Product Landscape

The rotavirus vaccine landscape is changing. Currently, four rotavirus vaccines are available globally and WHO-prequalified: RotaTeq®, ROTARIX®, ROTAVAC®, and ROTASIIL ®. Recent RotaTeq® and ROTARIX® supply shortages have impacted some existing programs and planned introductions in Gavi countries. More information is available here:

WHO publishes Rotavirus Surveillance Bulletin with new data from 2017

The newest bulletin from WHO's Global Rotavirus and Invasive Bacterial Vaccine-Preventable Disease (IB-VPD) surveillance network shows the most up-to-date global surveillance data reported to the WHO in 2017. In 2017, 62 member states reported data to the WHO Global Rotavirus Surveillance Network.

At RAVIN-ROTA Council Workshop, ROTA Council addressed vaccine availability, financing options, and ongoing efforts regarding rotavirus

ROTA Council teamed up with the Rotavirus Accelerated Vaccine Introduction Network (RAVIN) to co-host a workshop in Bangkok from 15-17 January.  The workshop provided participants from Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam with up-to-date information on the latest rotavirus vaccine products-including a presentation on the rollout of ROTAVAC and ROTASIIL in India-and provided a forum for participants to describe successes and challenges with previous new vaccine introductions in their countries.  Moreover, participants discussed opportunities to strategize how to improve vaccine coverage in hard-to-reach areas and populations, cost-effectiveness and financing options for new vaccines, and ongoing efforts in their countries to introduce rotavirus vaccines.

Association of Rotavirus Vaccination with the Incidence of Type 1 Diabetes in Children

Rotavirus (RV) infection has been linked to the development of type 1 diabetes in children. Researchers investigated the incidence of type 1 diabetes in Australian children before and after oral RV vaccine was introduced to the Australian National Immunization Program in 2007.

Results from the study report the first evidence of a decline in type 1 diabetes incidence after the introduction of oral RV vaccine. The decline occurred in the age cohort of children born after the introduction of RV vaccine, so researchers highlight that there should be ongoing surveillance to determine if the decline in incidence persists as children advance in age.

New VoICE e-bulletin on childhood diarrhea

Value of Immunization Compendium of Evidence (VoICE), an online searchable database, helps equip global partners with new evidence on immunization programs and highlights the importance of immunization. The new VoICE e-bulletin has a new featured issue on "The unyielding impact of childhood diarrhea," outlining the burden of diarrhea globally and on individuals, tools to defeat diarrhea, and steps going forward. Challenges related to low treatment coverage and constraints in vaccine supply must be met by resources and commitment to fight against one of the most common causes of childhood illness and death.

VIEW-Hub Report provides new information on global and Gavi uptake of rotavirus vaccine

As of January 2019, 64.6 million children worldwide have access to rotavirus vaccines. Considering current levels of vaccine coverage, just over 54 million infants are currently vaccinated against rotavirus disease. Read more about the most recent data on vaccine introduction status and vaccine landscape in VIEW-Hub's newest report on global vaccine introduction and implementation.
