The Message this Week

Preaching Text: Matthew 14:22-33

Character Under Construction.  Jesus follows Jewish law. He keeps kosher, he participates in rituals and worship...because they are ways for him to connect to God (which is why the rituals exist). His character is formed through this connection. This week, Jesus will face a test. I wonder how Jesus will do?  

Gracious God, help us grow our character out of our relationship with You and to align ourselves with Your plan already unfolding in the world. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Real questions from real people to learn more about faith.

• For believers around the world, that all be united in faith and harmony in the body of Christ. Let your church on earth be a witness to the beloved community of your heavenly kingdom.
• For your wondrous creation, that it thrives and flourishes as you intend. Raise up wise stewards to defend the natural world against carelessness and destruction. Safeguard endangered species and their habitats.
• For the nations of the world and all in authority, that they heed the cry of the outcast and ensure care for the most vulnerable. Give wisdom to leaders of countries, congregations, and communities, that they lead and serve justly.
• For all who are lonely, grieving, or struggling with chronic pain, that they find comfort, community, and hope. Send relief to all who struggle with illness of any kind.
• For this congregation, for visitors and those new to this faith community, that all may recognize the presence of Christ in each new face. Draw this community together in love and strengthen it in unwavering faith.
• For the saints before us whose work is done, that their faithful example continues to direct your church. May their witness remind us that your gifts and calling are irrevocable, whether in life or death.

Receive our prayers and answer, O God, as you have promised. All this we ask in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Lie: Pastor Trudy is actually the THIRD female pastor at Geneva Lutheran Church.

Truth: The piano in the sanctuary was previously owned by Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys, who used to have a house in St Charles.

Truth: Geneva Lutheran Church was founded in 1853.

Join us this Sunday, August 16 after the 9 AM service! We will divide up and tackle a bunch of small projects around the church. There are jobs for all skill levels, from sitting and organizing to deep cleaning and painting. Some jobs may be messy.
