CHANGE YOU CAN SEE

Middle Creek Drive Rehabilitation

Work continues on the Middle Creek project. The contractor completed installation of the underdrain on the westbound travel lane and is working on the eastbound travel lane. Installation of the bottom layer of asphalt pavement on Middle Creek is completed and the work continues on Wild Wind Cove, as well as dealing with intersections, driveways, sidewalks, and making manhole/valve adjustments.

The contractor is expected to reach substantial completion in mid-August before the school year begins. Final asphalt paving is planned to begin in early to mid-August.

City Park Parking Lot

Phase 1 of the Parking Lot project is completed and Phase II will be completed by Fall 2026. Construction of Phase I was substantially complete just in time for Red, White and Buda on July 4. Final construction items are underway and will be completed by Fall 2026.

Work continues on the City Park Parking Lot project.

BEHIND THE SCENES

Garison Park Phase I

The City of Buda is planning a groundbreaking ceremony for Thursday, July 30, for the John D. and Byrd Mims Garison Memorial Park. The event kicks off the long-anticipated transformation of the 40-acre natural area along Onion Creek just north of downtown and the Buda Amphitheater and City Park. The project will include a swimming hole, kayak and canoe launch, canopy walk and bird blind and overlook of the creek. Completion expected in Summer 2027.

West Goforth Road Reconstruction

In June 2026, City Council evaluated the bond projects and the financial projections to design and construct all of the transportation projects. City Council approved of the staff and bond consultant’s recommendation to only construct the western portion of W Goforth Road, approx. west of Bonita Vista to South Loop 4. Any of the remaining allocated funds for W Goforth Rd will be applied to Old Black Colony Road and Austin Street.

With this direction, staff is working with the project engineer to develop revised cost estimates, a phasing plan, and revised design. More information will be brought to the City Council in the coming months.

Old Black Colony Road Reconstruction

The reconstruction of Old Black Colony Road will include widening the roadway, adding sidewalks and cycling accommodations and drainage improvements. The road closed in June for an archaeological study connected to a historic cemetery in the corridor. With the study completed, the City will continue with right-of-way acquisition and design with construction expected to begin in late 2027. Property owners who may be affected by the project may start receiving letters from the City or be contacted by the City's land acquisition team to explain the acquisition process if that becomes necessary.

East Main Street Funding

The City of Buda has been awarded $10.5 million in federal transportation funding through the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) for the future reconstruction of East Main Street between IH-35 and Firecracker Drive. Combined with a $2.62 million local match, the project carries a total budget of $13.1 million. The funding is anticipated to become available in 2029.

RM967 West Sidewalk, Turn Lane Bid Updates

Construction of the project to address the sidewalk gap along RM967, west of FM1626 to Buda Sportsplex Drive, is now out for bid. The plan is to install a sidewalk along the south side of RM967, in a dedicated easement, connecting existing sidewalks near McDonald’s to the pedestrian crossing at RM967 and Buda Sportsplex Drive. Construction could begin as soon as August 2026 and is expected to last about 4 months.

The City is also completing the next steps of its agreement with TxDOT to extend the northbound turn lane from RM 967 to FM 1626.

Austin Street Update

On June 16, City Council approved a $176,764 increase to the city's design contract with Halff Associates for the Austin Street project, bringing the total to $996,482. The added funds cover survey and design work driven by property owner input along the corridor, along with updated drainage plans near Elm Street, San Marcos Street, and City Park. Council also authorized a follow-up task order to carry Austin Street through final design and into the bid phase, keeping the project moving toward construction.

UNIFIED DEVELOPMENT CODE UPDATE

The City of Buda is undergoing an 18-month effort to update its Unified Development Code (UDC), the framework that guides how land is developed and shaped throughout the community.

This update is primarily focused on implementing relevant recommendations and actions outlined in the Our Buda, Our Future 2024 Comprehensive Plan, ensuring the City’s development regulations are aligned with its long-term vision for growth and community character.

Key goals of the UDC update include:

  • Modernizing the code while maintaining its current structure and organization
  • Streamlining development processes to reduce the number of required board and committee appearances
  • Enhancing efficiency and flexibility within the development review process
  • Aligning regulations with the City’s vision for sustainable, high-quality long-term development

Together, these efforts are intended to create a clearer, more consistent framework for development while supporting responsible growth and investment in Buda.

As the project progresses, opportunities for public engagement will be provided to help ensure the updated code reflects community priorities and long-term goals.

UDC Open Door Design Workshop

Join us to develop the next phase of the City of Buda’s Unified Development Code (UDC) by conceptualizing future development scenarios for the upper FM1626 corridor.

The planning workshop is taking place in conjunction with the update to the City’s UDC, which is currently underway and scheduled to be completed by spring 2028. The planning workshop will take place from 1-4 p.m. Aug. 4 at Buda City Hall.

Participants are invited to meet the planning team and share ideas on possible futures for the corridor. A short presentation of the conceptual design plan will take place later that day during the City Council meeting at 6:30 p.m. at Buda City Hall.
