THE QUARTER IN REVIEW

Project GOAL Program Launch

Project GOAL launched its 21st year of programming with sites at Calcutt Middle School, Veterans Elementary School, and its inaugural year at Ella Risk Elementary School in Central Falls. Programming also returned for the second year at Alfred Lima Elementary in Providence with a total enrollment of 145 students in 4th-8th grades across the four sites. Students participating in the program receive an hour and a half of academic instruction followed by an hour and a half of soccer training and benefit from opportunities to participate in tournaments, field trips, and hear from guest speakers and program alumni. Following the launch of our weekly programming in October, NBC 10 WJAR highlighted Project GOAL. Check out the clip here.

4th Annual College Showcase

Project GOAL hosted its 4th Annual College Showcase in November, highlighting talent from local Rhode Island high schools. The event was hosted at The Wheeler School's fields and sponsored by We Got Soccer and The Wheeler School.

Johnluca Senior Project Fundraiser

A big shout out and thank you to North Kingstown High School senior, Johnluca Frenzilli, who hosted a futsal tournament with proceeds benefitting Project GOAL.

Guest Highlights

A special thank you to Senator Jack Reed and his staff who came out to visit our Project GOAL site at Alfred Lima and announced funding earmarked for its programming.

Every year, Project GOAL students receive shinguards donated by G-Form. A special thank you to Paul Fisher and his team for providing their Elite X shin pads to students in Central Falls and Providence.

Project GOAL students at Calcutt Middle School enjoyed a visit from Alexander Klosterkemper, the Chief of Sport and Impact for Fifa World Cup Boston who shared his personal journey and career with the students while answering a myriad of questions. Students also were able to see and wear a World Cup winners medal from the 2006 World Cup!

Calcutt students also enjoyed a visit from Project GOAL alum and Central Falls Athletic Hall of Fame student, Victor Parra, who shared his experience in Project GOAL as a student and his experience playing as a professional.

Holiday Tournaments

Project GOAL hosted a holiday tournament for program students from Veterans Elementary, Ella Risk Elementary, and Alfred Lima Elementary including both boys' and girls' divisions. A special thank you to Calcutt Middle School for hosting and for all the staff, parents, and coaches who came out to help and cheer on our students.

About fifty middle school students participated in a local holiday futsal tournament, with one of our U13 teams winning their division championship. Students work hard in the classroom and during program hours to earn the privilege of playing in the tournament.

Holiday Party 2024

Project GOAL hosted its annual holiday party with special guests from Next Play Training and RIFC. Students and family members from across our four program sites enjoyed food and raffle prizes including items donated by Brown Men's Soccer, Johnluca's senior project, Providence College Men's Soccer, Next Play Training, RIFC, and NE Revolution.

Alumni Update

Congratulations to PG alum, Roy and Juan Barrios, playing for TJ Slavoj Boleraz in Slovakia. Both were also called into the U23 Colombian National Team for an international mini-futbol tournament in Croatia next month. There agent is brother Kelvin Castillo, who is also Project GOAL alum, and a former New England Revolution Academy product. Kelvin is also back with Project GOAL coaching in our Central Falls and Providence programs.

A Special Tribute

In August 2024, Project GOAL tragically lost one of its students, Andry Rodas Villagran. Andry participated in Project GOAL programming at Calcutt Middle School in Central Falls beginning in sixth grade and would have been entering his eighth grade year. Andry was deeply loved and is greatly missed by family, friends, soccer teammates, and staff members at Project GOAL and the Calcutt community. In the aftermath of his passing, funds were raised to support his family with memorial expenses.
