"Research has shown that outdoor learning can have enormous benefits on students' health— mentally and physically— as well as academic success," said Robin Sidman-Buchanan, Executive Director of Project Green Schools.
Outdoor education is a powerful tool to help students develop independence, confidence, empathy towards their peers and others, and creativity while enhancing their decision-making and problem-solving skills. Research shows it supports children's emotional, behavioral, and intellectual development.
Numerous studies have shown that time in nature is beneficial for children, helping to reduce stress, increase attention, and improve immune function. These benefits equate to a better learning environment and more engaged students.
"During the pandemic, restaurants converted parking spaces and sidewalks into dining spaces, and we believe post-pandemic that schools should work to make an even stronger connection to the outdoor world. This year, we had many strong contenders for our Outdoor Classroom Challenge. We thank all of our applicants for sharing their proposals and visions for their outdoor learning spaces and applaud their efforts to take learning in various ways outside," added Sidman-Buchanan.
"Outdoor classrooms inspire and engage students. They boost children's self-esteem, self-confidence, connection to nature, and positive attitude to learning," said Michael Isenberg, Vice President at Chex Finer Foods, Project Green Schools Board Member, and Co-Founder of the Outdoor Classroom Challenge. "We are excited to propel and support their development in schools across the United States."
Project Green Schools will convene a final pitch round this Spring. These five schools will be invited to pitch their ideas to a panel of esteemed judges for a chance to win $10,000 to design and implement a new or existing outdoor space at their school.
