Michael Barger
Laborer
Hometown:
Woodstock, Vermont. I grew up in Beverly Farms, Massachusetts, but Woodstock is my center.

Family:
My mom Cindy, my dad Jeff, brother Scott, brother James & his wife Kelly, along with their lovely little baby Riley, and my beloved sister Maggie.

Dislikes:
People who are not honest.

Pets:
Yellow Lab named Bella - she is the offspring of a show dog and she's good at shed hunting.

Favorite Food:
Being creative and making my own food.

Favorite Color:
Orange, hands down. I had been waiting to get a YETI cooler in orange and now they finally have the King Crab edition.

Guilty Pleasure:
Food, going out.
Hobbies:
I work on the farm in Pomfert - it was initially a prize cattle farm and it's all just for family consumption now. We raise 30 chickens at a time and that usually takes about 2 months.

First Job:
Working at my father's marina, Manchester By The Sea. I was a dockboy.

Something everyone should know about you:
Don't be afraid to get to know me...I'm an open book.

Who do you most look up to?
I sort of have a canvas of people who I aspire to be like. My father taught me a lot about business because he was very business-focused.

Best advice ever received:
Focus on yourself, you can't always be focused on making others happy.

Best part about your job:
Wow, what a question. I'd say 2 things: the people, and the work itself. There are so many things to do, it's always interesting.

Anything else you'd like to share?
I'm excited to be here, and I love to have the next task in front of me so I can begin planning.

Project Highlight:
Bennington South End Upgrades
Photos by Jeff Gokey
This project was a typical water shut down with connection to existing. The plans ended up being incorrect and a field design was given for the unknown sewer lines that were encountered.
The 4 way cross was supposed to sit flat, but to clear the existing sewer, it had to be bent to a 45-degree angle; an additional 45-degree bend was added in to level the pipe out.
You can see threaded rod holding the pipes together so that when they are charged, they don’t blow apart.
We also replaced the sewer line (which was not part of the contract) to maintain Vermont State regulation of sewer separation, and encased all joints in concrete.
Shout-out to the entire crew working on this project:

Zack Thompson (Superintendent), Jeff Gokey (Foreman), Ken Brewer, Garrett Joly, Todd Ross, Marc Rozell, Frank Trombley, Dave Valley and Rodney Watkins.

Great job problem solving and demonstrating Casella Construction standards!

Safety Topic: Heat-Related Illnesses
With the high temperatures we've been experiencing, it's important to be aware of (and take steps to avoid) heat-related illnesses, such as:
Heat Cramps: Usually experienced as muscle spasms or cramping in the stomach, arms and the back of the legs or calves.

Heat Exhaustion: Symptoms include headaches, dizziness, weakness, wet skin, confusion, nausea, or vomiting. If a co-worker starts displaying any of these symptoms, you may need to step in to help provide assistance.

Heat Stroke can be deadly. If a co-worker is experiencing red, hot and dry skin (they stop sweating), confusion, fainting or convulsions, you will need to take immediate action to help them. Immediately call 911 (do not wait) and move them to a cooler area.
Please click here to learn what you should do if any of your co-workers exhibit any of the symptoms above, and for more information. Please look out for each other, and stay cool out there!
