Updated Construction News

Construction on the U.S. 69 & 167th Street interchange

Construction is progressing quickly as the summer begins and we enter the final phase of the project. KDOT appreciates drivers' patience and awareness while navigating the work zone.

Long-term closures are in effect for several ramps at I-435/U.S. 69/College Blvd. as bridge reconstruction continues. Please follow the marked detours.

The 167th Street interchange work continues, with the construction crews progressing to deck construction on the new U.S. 69 northbound bridge over 167th Street. In addition to adding south-facing ramps to and from both directions of U.S. 69, 167th Street will be expanded to four lanes and include roundabouts at the U.S. 69 and 167th Street intersections. The 167th Street closure will last through early October.

Tolling devices have been installed and testing is underway along the northbound lanes between 151st Street and 135th Street. Variable toll message signs have been installed in some locations and will show TESTING in lights on the board until the express lanes open to traffic.

Northbound and Southbound U.S. 69 Fully Closed Overnight May 27 and 28

All northbound and southbound U.S. 69 lanes in Johnson County between 103rd St. and College Blvd. will be fully closed to traffic overnight from:

  • 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 27 to 6 a.m. Wednesday, May 28
  • 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 28 to 6 a.m. Thursday, May 29

These closures are necessary for both pavement work and overhead truss installation. The work is part of the KDOT U.S. 69 Expansion Project (69Express). All scheduled project work is weather permitting and subject to change.

During the closure, detours will be marked as follows:

Northbound U.S. 69:

  • Motorists will be directed to use the northbound U.S. 69 to eastbound I-435 ramp. Travel east to Antioch Rd. Turn left onto Antioch Rd., then turn left on the westbound entrance ramp. Take the ramp to northbound ramp to U.S. 69.

Southbound U.S. 69:

  • Motorists will be directed to take the exit ramp to I-435/103rd St. Continue on that ramp, following the signs for southbound U.S. 69.

The map shows closure locations marked in red and detour routes marked in blue and green

Trail Updates

To ensure pedestrian safety, some trails under U.S. 69 have been closed during construction. The timeline for local trail openings include:

  • The Tomahawk Creek trail is scheduled to open in June/July 2025
  • The Indian Creek Trail will reopen with the completion of the southbound U.S. 69 bridge in July 2025
