What's happening

The contractor is excavating for the living shoreline, and grading the site in

preparation for the installation of the new concrete walkways. Simultaneously, the

electrician is installing wiring, completing the electrical panel and setting the bases

for the new lighting within the park. Piling activities for the viewing platform have

been completed, and assembly of the overlook will soon be underway. Construction materials have begun to arrive after experiencing a delay due to a national material supply shortage. Construction has been delayed. Project completion is anticipated to occur in August 2022.

Project Overview and Benefits

The Brittany Bay Park and Living Shoreline project is designed to enhance our city’s green space and improve water quality in Biscayne Bay through the use of nature-based solutions. Nature-based solutions can be defined as the sustainable management and use of nature for tackling challenges such as climate change, water and food security, biodiversity protection, human health, and disaster risk management.

The park improvements will revitalize the waterfront and enhance the experience of park users. The construction of a hybrid living shoreline will protect the existing mangroves and create a new coastal habitat allowing for the planting of additional mangroves.

An overlook with a viewing platform will provide access to the water’s edge. Lighting and exercise equipment will be replaced throughout the park, along the new concrete walkways. New furnishings and landscaping – trees and shrubbery, complete the new design for the park.

The project receives partial funding from the G.O. Bond Infrastructure Project: Seawalls and Shorelines, and The Nature Conservancy.

Timeline

Construction for the renovation of the park began on August 23, 2021. The Brittany Bay Park renovation is currently scheduled to be completed in August 2022.

What to Expect

• Construction activities are ongoing and the park will remain closed for 9 months during construction.
• A fence has been installed around the park and will remain for the duration of construction
• Moderate levels of construction noise are expected during approved construction hours.
• Construction equipment, machinery, and workers will be present in the work zone.
• Park users may visit Allison Park, located at 6500 Collins Ave.
