Street trees along Century Boulevard, between Ariel and Borwick streets, are being removed in preparation for the Century Boulevard Extension Project.
The early tree removal is needed to build a trench for utilities to relocate ahead of construction. Winter removal also avoids impacts to migrating birds under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.
Only trees along Century Boulevard, between Ariel and Borwick streets, are scheduled for removal this month. Trees north of Borwick Street and south of Ariel Street are not included in early removal.
Trees are being examined to see if they can be reused on the project, given to the Hillsboro Parks and Recreation Department for habitat restoration, or if they need to be hauled away. All trees will be surveyed to make sure no active nest are present before they are removed. New street trees will be planted at the end of construction.
Century Boulevard will be extended between Main Street and Lois Street, with a new bridge. Construction is expected to begin later this year. An open house is being planned as an opportunity to meet the contractor and share construction information.
