Farmington and River Roads Intersection preferred alternative

Thank you for your interest and comments on the Farmington and River Roads Intersection Project. An open house earlier this year was well attended with over 260 comments.  Comments received include:  176 comments preferring a roundabout* 14 preferred the center alternative 42 preferred the offset center alternative 56 preferred the southwest alternative 34 comments preferring a traffic signal 4 comments preferring the intersection to remain as it is 34 comments did not state a preference, but did provide feedback which will be taken into consideration  *Some comments did not indicate a preferred alternative, only that a roundabout is preferable to a traffic signal.

A roundabout was selected due to the reduction in vehicle conflict points, which improves the safety of the intersection. The traffic analysis demonstrated the roundabout operated with less vehicle delay compared to the signal both when modeling current traffic volumes and looking long term at anticipated 2040 traffic volumes.    The preferred roundabout alternative is a hybrid of the off-center and the southwest concepts displayed during the May online open house. The preferred concept aims to reduce impacts to property owners and avoid impacts to the floodplain, sensitive areas and environmental restrictions.

Project design intends to:  Balance the needs of passenger vehicles and farm equipment by coordinating with local farmers to ensure equipment is accommodated.  Analyze and provide facilities so bicyclists are able to maneuver the roundabout.  Implement lessons learned from previous roundabouts such as signage location and using mountable curbs.    The preferred alternative design will be further developed and presented at an open house in spring 2021.  For more information, visit the Farmington and River Roads Intersection Open House or contact Capital Project Services at 503-846-7800 or [email protected].
