The Oregon Department of Transportation, Washington County and the city of Forest Grove agree that a traffic signal is the preferred option for the Fern Hill Road-Maple Street and Highway 47 intersection. The project is still only funded for design, which will be managed by the County with input from the city and ODOT.

Our agencies will work together to find construction funding.

The design team will consider more project features, which may include the following:

  • Advance flashers: Flashing lights to warn drivers when approaching a signal

  • Dilemma zone detection technology: The dilemma zone is the stretch of road as you approach the signal, when a signal is changing from green to yellow. Depending how close the driver is to the signal, they decide to continue through the light or stop. The detection technology helps determine when the signal should change, and ensures vehicles have stopped before allowing cross traffic to go.

  • Median islands: Concrete islands between vehicle lanes with traffic in opposite directions

  • Curbs: Curbs assist with drainage and separate vehicles from pedestrians.

  • Curb ramps and sidewalks: Pedestrian safety and access will be improved with Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant ramps and sidewalks.

  • Railroad crossing upgrades: The railroad crossing will be improved, making crossings easier for all.

  • Visual cues: Plants and other visual cues will indicate an urban area so drivers recognize the change in roadway environment and the upcoming signal.

  • Flood gates: Coordination with the Fern Hill Road flood notification system will help drivers know when the road is closed.

We are working with the design consultant on the project scope. An open house is planned for summer.
