PROJECT UPDATE

January 2023

Timber Road was closed between Strassel and Cochran roads in March 2023 after we detected increased landslide movement. We expect that Timber Road will reopen by the end of 2024 after the construction of a repair.

During summer 2023, our consultant completed a geotechnical evaluation to learn about the landslide and propose methods for stabilizing the road. After weighing the costs and benefits of several options, we decided on a stabilization method and and identified project funding.

We will stabilize the landslide by excavating the soft earth under the road and the downslope embankment to reach stable ground. We will then rebuild the slope with stronger materials. Our consultant will do design work this spring. Construction is expected to begin in summer and finish by the end of the year. Schedules are subject to change.

Timber Road will remain closed through the end of construction. Interim repair options are costly and would be destroyed during the construction of a permanent repair.

The project is expected to cost $3-5 million, and will be funded by the Road Fund.

Project Timeline

Schedules are subject to change

  • March 2023: Timber Road closed between Strassel and Cochran Roads after we detected increased landslide movement and significant pavement displacement.

  • Spring 2023-Fall 2023: Our consultant completed a geotechnical evaluation to learn about the shape, location and movement of the landslide. Using that information, they developed multiple possible project concepts to stabilize the slide.
  • Fall 2023: We weighed the costs and benefits of the project concepts and worked to identify project funding. A project concept was decided on.

  • Winter 2023-Spring 2024: Our consultant is designing the project.

  • Summer 2024: We will bid for a construction contractor.
  • Late Summer 2024: We expect construction to begin.

  • End of 2024: We expect construction will be complete and Timber Road will reopen.
