PROJECT UPDATE

March 2024

A first set of plans for the Timber Road landslide repair have been prepared by our consultant, defining the project area, depth of excavation and the general design.

These plans, called “30% design,” give us an opportunity to provide feedback to the design engineers as they continue to develop construction plans. This preliminary cross-section taken from the 30% design plans shows what the repair could look look like. It illustrates how we will stabilize the landslide by excavating down to stable ground and rebuilding the slope with stronger materials.

The bottom layer is drainage rock to allow water to filter into an underground drain. Above the drain rock will be several layers of gravel wrapped in plastic geogrids, providing a stable road base.

We will then build the road on top. A stone embankment on the downslope side will provide additional support for the reconstructed slope.

We expect design work will continue through the spring. The next milestone will be “90% design,” which includes specific plans for the entire work area, the road, excavation, erosion control and more.

We will then send the project out for bid and begin construction. We expect the road will remain closed until construction is complete by the end of 2024.

Project Timeline

Schedules are subject to change

  • March 2023: Timber Road closed between Strassel and Cochran Roads following increased landslide movement and significant pavement displacement.

  • Spring-fall 2023: The geotechnical evaluation was completed to learn about the shape, location and movement of the landslide. This allowed the consultant to develop multiple possible project concepts to stabilize the slide.
  • Fall 2023: We weighed the costs and benefits of the project concepts and identified project funding. A project concept was decided on.

  • Winter 2023-Spring 2024: Our consultant is designing the project.

  • Late spring 2024: Our consultant will complete the designs and we will begin right-of-way acquisition.
  • Summer 2024: We will bid for a construction contractor.

  • Late Summer 2024: We expect construction to begin.

  • End of 2024: We expect to complete construction reopen Timber Road.
