Alcohol Awareness Month
Getting the Word Out

Drinking too much alcohol increases the risk of health-related problems like injuries, violence, liver disease, and some types of cancer. This April during Alcohol Awareness Month, Promise Community Health Center encourages you to take this time to educate yourself and your loved ones about the dangers of drinking too much.
Nearly 30 people die every day due to drunk driving - that's one death every 48 minutes! To spread the word and prevent alcohol abuse, Promise is joining other organizations across the country to honor Alcohol Awareness Month and prevent alcohol abuse in our community.
If you are drinking too much, you can improve your health by cutting back or quitting. Here are some strategies to help you cut back or stop drinking:
-  Limit your drinking to no more than 1 drink a day for women and no more than 2 drinks a day for men.
-  Keep track of how much you drink.
-  Don't drink when you are upset.
-  Avoid places where people drink too much.
-  Make a list of reasons not to drink.
If you are concerned about someone else's drinking, offer to help.

Promise Birth Center Update:

Some of Promise's staff, patients, and supporters will be traveling to Ankeny, Iowa on April 14 for the Certificate of Need hearing for Promise Birth Center. As reported in the February newsletter, Promise was on the verge of submitting a detailed description of the project to the Iowa Department of Public Health. The proposal and application process was tedious and involved hours of compiling research, data, and support, but will all be concluded on this day in April by a Review team which is a panel appointed by the governor of Iowa.

"Because the only other free-standing birth center is in Des Moines, women in northwest Iowa lack choices."
