MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

February 26, 2024

As a multi-industry trade organization, rarely do we reach outside of our membership and invite the general public to participate in something we’re doing. When we launched the Coolest Thing Made in Delaware competition for manufacturers in our state, little did we know how excited and engaged Delaware residents would be!

Since Thursday morning, when voting went live, we have seen almost 14,000 views of the 50 different product nominations and over 5,000 votes. To say this competition has gone viral and proven to be reasonably popular would be an understatement!

Therefore, if you have not already done so, click here to look at the Coolest Thing Made in Delaware nominations and cast your vote. This round ends Wednesday at 4:30 PM. Join the thousands of neighbors that are participating and helping us promote our innovative and exciting state manufacturers!

News You Can Use

New home sales figures from January lead off our week of economic news, followed on Tuesday by the February consumer confidence survey. Wednesday brings us January retail inventory data, and revised GDP results from Q4 of last year. Personal income and spending figures from January are public on Thursday morning, as are January pending home sales numbers. We close out the week on the first day of March, and learn of January construction spending data and manufacturing results from February.

This is a busy time for companies hosting earnings calls, and we kickoff the week today with calls by Domino’s Pizza, Elanco Animal Health, Fresh Del Monte, SBA Communications, STAAR Surgical, and Zoom Video Communications, among others. Tuesday is led off by Agilent, AutoZone, Constellation Energy, Norwegian Cruise Line, Portillo’s, and TKO Group Holdings. Chemours headlines the Wednesday calls, and is joined by AMC Entertainment, James River Group, Steven Madden, and TJX, to name a few. Best Buy, Dole, Toronto-Dominion Bank, Utz Brands, and Bank of Montreal round out the Thursday and Friday lineup.

Uniquely Delaware

How economically dynamic is Delaware?

What is economic dynamism? The Economic Innovation Group (EIG), a bipartisan public policy organization, describes it as “the rate and pervasiveness of change across industries, geographies, and the labor market in an economy.”

Delaware’s Index of State Dynamism (ISD), based on 2021 data, is 49.5 — the third highest in the US, after Utah and Idaho.

The state’s ranking in the other five areas are:

  • 5th in migration
  • 6th in firm change
  • 11th in core startup rate
  • 11th in housing permits per capita
  • 27th in inventors per capita
