Propel Hazelwood Designated As
One of Four Pittsburgh "Champion Schools"
City of Pittsburgh's "Safe Routes to School"
After a competitive application process, the City of Pittsburgh Department of Mobility and Infrastructure (DOMI) has announced the four inaugural "Champion Schools" within the City of Pittsburgh to kick-off the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program for the 2020-2021 school year. Of those four schools, we are honored to have Propel Hazelwood named.

SRTS is a national program focused on improving communities by increasing the number of students biking and walking to school and developing their skills as safe users of our public streets. The goal of the Safe Routes to School program is to educate school age children in safe walking and biking practices, encourage children to use an active mode of transportation, provide engineering improvements around schools and engage with community organizations how Safe Routes to School should begin.
Propel Hazelwood Principal Tina Mayer said, " I have walked the neighborhood with my scholars, and I am encourages that this program will improve sidewalks, and overall, safe commuting conditions. The idea of our scholars riding bikes to school add another layer of hope for this community. Seeing children be children, and showing excitement to come to school is the first step in ensuring a successful educational experience."

With this school year looking differently than any other we have witnessed before, the Safe Routes to School program will support students and families through remote learning safety activities and social distancing events like Walk Safety Week, Bike to School Day and Crossing Guard Appreciation Day. Promising Principles Awards
Our Propel vision is detailed through our six Promising Principles that emerged from the founders' vision and beliefs about children, school and the "Propel Pioneers" experience during the organization's early years. The principles are then put into practice through our non-negotiable "Power Practices" that make a school a "Propel" school.

To directly recognize our team members that go the extra mile to personify these Promising Principles and incorporate them into their classrooms, our team members can annually nominate their peers for the Promising Principles and Power Practices Awards. This year's recipients are as follows:
Vibrant Teaching Communities
Nick Alesantrino, Mike Shannon and Jon Feltham, members of the Propel Montour Middle School math team proudly display their Vibrant Teaching Communities Awards.
Agile Instruction
Alonna Cuffe's continuous use of data, planning, using varying methods of learning and use of technology make her an amazing educator and are all reasons why she is the recipient of the Agile Instruction Award.
Quest for Excellence
Andrew Street's Amil Cook was all smiles when he was presented with the Quest for Excellence honor. Amil has forged partnerships, reinforces a clear vision and culture, and focuses on scholar success in his classroom.
Culture of Dignity
Cornel Fulton creates an environment in which every individual has worth and value at BHMS. That spirit extends to families and the community. That is why he was presented with the Culture of Dignity award.
Fully Valued Arts
Propel East's Alex Slaughter was sincerely surprised when Dr. Chekan arrived to present him with the Fully Valued Arts award for infusing his class with powerful practices and strong results.
Embedded Support
Darren Stromock, Assistant Director of Student Affairs, earned the Embedded Support award for supporting educators, families and scholars - something he does with an awesome attitude even on Mondays!
