The end of our Stewardship reflections and discernment will be Sunday, November 22nd, The Feast of Christ the King, the Last Sunday of the Church's year. On that Day the Pledge Cards with our intentions to support St. Mary's life in 2027 will be received and placed on the Altar.

Many thanks to all who made the Election Eve Dinner a Success, the prep crews for the food, the cooks, the Bus "Girls", and "Boys", the Dish washers and kitchen crew, the bakers, the take-down/cleanup helpers and our ticket takers! A special thanks to the chef extraordinaire, Alfred Brigham!!

Great job all!

"Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive." Howard Thurman

From the Book Club Survey, it seems the preference for most is for once a month, on Wednesday afternoon. So as not to conflict with the Silver Circle, we'll meet at 2:30, and our first meeting will be on Wednesday November 18th.

Please read the first three chapters (they are short) and read the reflection questions and try out the spiritual practices at the end of each chapter. If you would like me to order a book for you let me know.

What Makes You Come Alive: A Spiritual Walk with Howard Thurman is a 2023 book by Lerita Coleman Brown—not a book written by Howard Thurman himself. It explores Thurman’s life, contemplative spirituality, racial justice, nonviolence, and spiritual practices such as silence, attention to nature, and “centering down.”

This Sunday's Readings and Study Aids

The Collect
O God, whose blessed Son came into the world that he might destroy the works of the devil and make us children of God and heirs of eternal life: Grant that, having this hope, we may purify ourselves as he is pure; that, when he comes again with power and great glory, we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

The First Reading
Wisdom 6:12–16
Wisdom is radiant and unfading,
and she is easily discerned by those who love her,
and is found by those who seek her.
She hastens to make herself known to those who desire her.
One who rises early to seek her will have no difficulty,
for she will be found sitting at the gate.
To fix one’s thought on her is perfect understanding,
and one who is vigilant on her account will soon be free from care,
because she goes about seeking those worthy of her,
and she graciously appears to them in their paths,
and meets them in every thought.

The Response ( as it says on pg.351 of the Book of Common Prayer, "A Psalm, hymn, or anthem may follow each Reading." This is one of those Sundays when another Canticle is suggested in place of the Responsorial Psalm.)

Wisdom of Solomon 6:17-20
The beginning of wisdom is the most sincere desire for instruction,
and concern for instruction is love of her,
and love of her is the keeping of her laws,
and giving heed to her laws is assurance of immortality,
and immortality brings one near to God;
so the desire for wisdom leads to a kingdom.

The Epistle
1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who have died, so that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died. For this we declare to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will by no means precede those who have died. For the Lord himself, with a cry of command, with the archangel's call and with the sound of God's trumpet, will descend from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up in the clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the air; and so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage one another with these words.

The Gospel

Matthew 25:1-13

Jesus said, “Then the kingdom of heaven will be like this. Ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went to meet the bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. When the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil with them; but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, all of them became drowsy and slept. But at midnight there was a shout, ‘Look! Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’ Then all those bridesmaids got up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise replied, ‘No! there will not be enough for you and for us; you had better go to the dealers and buy some for yourselves.’ And while they went to buy it, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went with him into the wedding banquet; and the door was shut. Later the other bridesmaids came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I do not know you.’ Keep awake therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.”
