Proper Disposal of Dangerous Items
Proper recycling practices are not only good for the environment and economy they're also put in place to protect those who sort your recyclables at the Materials Recovery Facility (MRF).

Click the video or click here to follow along with Matt Van Benten, Operations Supervisor for the RRRASOC MRF, as he explains what happens when potentially dangerous items are thrown in with your recyclables.
What Should I Do with My...?
  • Sharp Objects: Any sharp objects such as scissors, blades, and needles should not be placed with your recycling, as they can injure workers who are sorting items on the conveyor line. Dispose of sharp objects and medical sharps with your household garbage. Wrap sharp objects with duct tape. For medical sharps, use an FDA-approved sharps container, available at most pharmacies. Otherwise, use a rigid plastic container like a laundry detergent jug that can be sealed and labeled "SHARPS".

  • Electronics: Devices such as cellphones and laptops are powered by lithium-ion batteries, which can cause MRF fires and explosions, putting our workers at risk. Bring your e-waste to an HHW collection event for proper disposal.
  • Batteries: Batteries create fire hazards at the MRF, so recycle them at an HHW collection event. Automotive and marine batteries can be returned to automotive battery retailers. Check our special options for battery recycling for Farmington and South Lyon residents with the Recycling Directory.

Have You Recycled at Our Drop-Off Sites?
RRRASOC recycling drop-off sites are open to the public and free to use! Here are some things to remember when using the recycling drop-off sites:

  • Flatten all boxes to keep the bins from filling up too quickly.
  • Empty recyclables out of bags and boxes into the bins. MRF equipment is designed to sort loose materials.
  • Keep plastic bags out. Recycle them at grocery retailers.
  • Bins are emptied multiple days each week. If full, please come back another day. Materials left outside of the bins creates litter problems and makes it difficult for the bins to be serviced.
Stop by during daylight hours to drop off your recyclables.
Save your HHW, e-waste, and Simple Recycling for our next HHW collection event on July 16th!
