Shepherding

Howard explains what being an estate agent really means.

This spring, all over our fields and uplands, shepherds will be supervising lambing and moving their sheep about. Moving anything, especially sheep, is often complicated and fraught with difficulty. Just think about moving twin six-year-olds singlehandedly from bedroom to school every morning or moving a central heating boiler. It all takes planning, patience, knowhow, experience and resolve. It means expecting the unexpected, problem solving, and often the highest level of tact and diplomacy.

But some inexperienced people faced with moving a flock of sheep may not think it’s even worth hiring a shepherd. Then, when it’s has been pouring with rain all day, the quad bike’s broken down, a fox has snatched a lamb, they’ve lost a welly, and a large group of unreasonable ewes make a long break for freedom they realise that employing a shepherd is worth every penny.

Estate agents are like shepherds. Most of the time their job isn’t just selling property but moving people. Estate agents arrange for something with lots of moving parts - each with a mind of its own - to end up where it should be on the date it is supposed to be there. Experienced estate agents like us shepherd people, contracts, surveys, mortgages, removals, withdrawals, false starts, disappointments, the unforeseen and the triumphs from one place to another.

So, if you are selling property this spring, hire a great estate agent like us. Think of the sheep. It will be worth it. You won’t just be getting your property sold, you’ll be getting a moving experience.

Vendor Comment: "We've lived in Stoke Park Road South for more than 20 years and love the peace and quiet of the 'No through' road. On our first viewing of 'Marchlands' we were attracted by the height of the ceilings and the spacious, airy feel of the apartment.  We are only a 5 minute walk to the Downs and a 20 minute walk to Whiteladies Road shops, cafes and other amenities such as a library and Railway station. We've been able to take regular walks on the Downs and enjoyed the views of the Avon Gorge including the Clifton Suspension Bridge. Our south facing terrace has provided a lovely area for many a family meal in the sunshine in sight of a wide variety of established trees. The circular stone staircase leading from the terrace to the back garden has been well used by visiting grandchildren. We've enjoyed regular visits, all year round, to the nearby University of Bristol Botanic Gardens only a 5 minute walk away. Marchlands has been a lovely home for us."

Vendor Comment: I’ve loved living and working in this beautiful flat over the last five years. The south-facing living room has doubled as my work-from-home office and has been a wonderful place to spend many comfortable hours. Despite being on a quiet road where you can always find a parking spot, it’s also in a brilliant, vibrant location, with easy access to Gloucester Rd, Whiteladies Rd, Redland station, Clifton Downs and much more, which allowed me to build a life in Bristol and make the city truly feel like home. While positive changes in circumstances mean that I’m moving on, I’m also really sad to say goodbye to Glentworth Road. To mention a few other positives: The garden provides a nice bit of quiet outside space right on the doorstep. Good pubs and restaurants within walking distance: great roast at the Shakespeare, sunny beer garden at the Cambridge Arms, craft ale at the Good Measure, and amazing restaurants including Michelin starred Wilsons on Chandos Rd. Despite the high ceilings, the living room catches the sun and warms up quickly on a sunny day, while the large radiator does the job if it’s overcast. The freehold is managed by a company formed from the owners, so there isn’t the hassle or cost of an external freehold management company'.
