FALL TOURS AT PROSPECT GARDENS WESTPORT
While the Spring gardens are exciting with their new growth and sporting their fresh yellowish-green spring colors, the Fall gardens are about lushness, maturity and abundance. The Fall gardens show the strength of survival - surviving the heat of the summers, the pounding of thunderstorms, the insistence of summer suns. Fall gardens are excitement on a different level. What we thought we knew in the Spring is what we understand more about in the Fall. Fall is the season of abundance and gathering before the Winter hibernation and rest.
At Prospect Gardens, the first thing you will notice will be how everything has filled out since you last visited in the Spring.
- The Meadow flowers are now over your head. You’ll see the tall yellow Helenium sunflowers and white Queen Anne’s Lace fading to make way for the stunning purple Asters just coming into bloom.
- Grassy borders are full with plumes waving in the breezes.
- The YinYang grassy circle might be giving off a musky scent now that it has seedheads.
- The Veggie garden is colorful and still full, showing the harvest of hundreds of pounds of locally donated produce
- Summer hydrangeas are heavy with flowering heads.
- The Frog Pond is full of water lilies and lotus pods.
- Apples, quince and grapes are ripening in the orchards.
- The perennial gardens are brimming with colors and textures.
- The evergreens are producing cones for seed production (important for winter bird feeding).
- You might see the first tinges of shrub and tree foliage starting to show color changes.
--About Prospect Gardens--
Prospect Gardens Westport dates back to the 1812 original Victorian farmhouse and surrounding acres of the Wakeman onion farm. Through a series of abutting property acquisitions over the last 20+ years, the property is now a contiguous arboretum-style garden of almost 9 acres featuring collections, gardens, open lawns, and winding pathways leading from one area to the next, allowing the visitor a three-dimensional experience of being "in" the gardens. Mature deciduous and evergreen trees create a sweeping canvas and provide a sense of scale, shape, and texture reflective of the owners' contemporary style and sense of design.
Some of the property's key features include a Mediterranean graveled entry garden, 2 orchards, a 3 stone-tiered vegetable garden, berry houses (blueberry, raspberry), bee hives, a sunny perennial garden, a shady woodland walk, a conifer collection, numerous flowering shrub and grass borders, a Japanese-inspired meditation garden and maple collection, red-clay tennis court, two pools, a glasshouse, an internationally renowned sculpture, and a 1-acre perennial/native wildflower meadow. Most recently added is a 4-tiered amphitheater with a stone-medallioned stage.
Our tour will be conducted by Cindy Shumate, resident landscape designer and curator of Prospect Gardens.
